I don't which side Kotal Kahn is now.

I just hope he's not fully evil. I want him on the good side.

The only side he's on is his own.

He's neutral and if anything,
Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)
foreshadows what Raiden will become.
They're both protecting their realms in the end.

I'd say Kano is Chaotic Evil, he just switches sides all the time for convenience.

The alignments are obsolete now. A lot of the characters have their own agenda and Kotal Kahn is one of them.

We have to remember that Kotal still thinks D'Vorah was working with the Earthrealmers last time we saw him. He also thinks they stole the amulet from him, along with D'Vorah. He isn't a bad guy, he was just mislead.

We can obviously infer that he's on his way of becoming the new ruler of Outworld. Whether he wants to be an evil dominating ruler or a righteous one, I'd like to say it was done on purpose as to leave us filling the blanks, but sadly like everything else in the story, I think they were just being lazy.

Read the comics, Kotal is trying to be righteous and serve the people of Outworld. In the game, he tries to side with Shinnok thinking that Earthrealm was done, and Outworld was next. He does whatever necessary to protect his realm as he sees fit. His actions may seem evil to earthrealm, but as people keep bringing up, he does things in the interest of his realm.
Playing Zaterrans & Ziggurats? I`m in!

Yeah, Kotal seems like a good guy. While his story says he looked up to Shao Kahn, he isn`t depicted as brutal. He was concerned for the people, mentioning an upcoming harvest.

I can see him defending Outworld from Raiden or Liu Kang`s aggression.

I still don't see what they are ultimately going for. I mean, the comic notwithstanding since they paid it no mind in the story mode, the game just makes him out to be a dumb brute.

Holding the Earthrealmers captive and taking the Amulet was a pretty "bad guy" move. I mean yeah, Earthrealm can't be trusted to protect it, but why take the Kombat Kidz captive? Leverage against Raiden when he comes for the amulet, sure...but why not just send them home to deliver a message?

"You want the amulet? Come take it you useless fuckwit. You screw everything else up, you'll probably screw that up too. It's safer with me. Your pal, Kotal"

Hint - it wasn't safer. At all. XD

What the fuck are people on about when they say Kotal Kahn is a good guy, he's not brutal, etc.?

His variations are literally Blood God and War God. It's his whole fucking schtick.

True, he's not as indiscriminately bloodthirsty as, say, Shao Kahn because he stops and actually thinks about who may be an asset to him, but this idealization of the guy who runs the empire almost just as ruthlessly as Shao Kahn (he was going to execute a bread thief if yall don't remember) is getting quite frankly annoying.

Kotal is a force to be reckoned with acting in his own self-interest and that makes him interesting. I think the person above me who said alignment is obsolete in MK had the right idea going.

He's like Vlad the Impaler or Genghis Kahn; hero to his people, villain to the world. That's how I understand him at least.
Shao Kahn was all about power & conquest, merging realms into Outworld.
He was cruel, and brutal.

Kotal Kahn is not concerned with conquest.
He seems more compassionate, reasonable & humane...

Outworld is a wild, bloody, brutal place.
Death for stealing bread doesn`t surprise me. I assumed most people ate meat mostly, anyways. There`s plenty of animal monster things to eat.

Outworld is a fallow realm, not much grows, that isn`t deadly.
I`d assume bread is a rare comoddity, and good quality bread even rarer.
Kitana having flour for her cake is a no brainer, she`s Royalty, and would have access to a larger supply.
Bo`Rai Cho even says Earthrealm alcohol is far superior to Outworld.
Grain crops for Beers, Bread, and Flour are probably lacking the proper nutrients because of the harsh, rugged terrain. Any healthy plant life is deadly, i.e. the Living Forest. The Bread may`ve been an expensive import.

I think it was discussed years ago, whether Kitana would order a salad, or if it even existed in outworld.
