I believe that a good guy will be the big bad boss this game. Bo Rai Cho, no joke. Give drunk with power? Under Quan's spell? He could be the one drawing all of these martial artists that he trained to be fighting. If they beat him the curse is lifted type deal. Just a fun guess, we'll see

I just don't see that happening...
Bo Rai Cho is a drunk but he is ultimately good-natured. He's like the Baloo of MK. So no he's not going to end up being the big shocking villain.
Mainly because no one buying this game is going to remember who the hell he is outside of this small over thinking fabase and it wouldn't be much of a twist. It's someone predictable like Liu Kang.

I would be a crazed fanatic if Havik is a boss and is playable.

I love Bo too much as a "good guy". He deserves something parallel with the spotlight of big baddy though.
Still not sure who it could be. There's (in order of most obvious to least, imo) -
Shinnok
Liu Kang
Onaga
Shao Kahn
Shang Tsung
-->Goro?

I think that the two things that are driving me nuts are knowing of there are stage animalities (GOD I hope! ! ) and who the eff the boss is! ! Boon really peaked my interest when he said it was a returning character, but someone we'd least suspect

Shujinko or Deagon will be the big baddie.

Daegon is a possibility, but he's going to need some sort of build up to feel like a true big bad. He could work since he is half god/half edenian but he hasn't done anything that impressive, or at least nothing to suggest he could take on the likes of Goro one on one and survive.

Someone we wouldn't expect... Did Boon ever confirm that it's someone we've seen before? If not, I could see it being a new character, since we wouldn't expect THAT particular character.
But if it is someone we already know, my list would be:
Raiden
Argus
The lady in Jade's ending
Shao Khan
Liu Kang
Shang Tsung
Someone that already has some juice that can ascend to another level and become a big bad and make it believable. Elevating a henchmen to that level just seems kinda... Cheap? I mean, it'd be cool to see a character like Baraka get such a story bump, but I don't even know if I'd want Baraka to be the main villain. That'd feel like a bit if a letdown somehow. Same goes for Bo Rai Cho.

I'm almost certain that Boon said the boss would be a returning character back at on of Sony's events at E3 last year, and that the character's being a boss was going to be surprising.
Until Raiden was revealed, I was certain it was gonna be him. Now I'm convinced it's going to be Liu Kang.

Liu was my first insight on becoming the main boss, but after reading others posting that he would be to much of an obvious candidate, I went with Quan Chi... that sure failed.
So, now I'm going with Shang, Shujinko or Daegon. If it is Liu after all this time, I won't mind as seeing what Raiden did to him and his allies.

I wouldn't go so far as to saying that Bo' Rai Cho would be the main boss for this game, he's a mentor role at best, I don't think he would be the type of character to be pitted against both good and evil characters together. He's the type of character that stays out of the spot light and guides other warriors to reach their potential. Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Kitana were some of his students and he only led Outworld's armies because Raiden and the rest of the Earth warriors were defeated by the Deadly Alliance and there quite frankly was nobody else to do so.
My main guess and the most logical guess for the boss to be is Liu Kang. Even with his presumed death at the end of MK9 it is a fact that he is still in fact the Mortal Kombat champion. I feel that the Champion himself should be the boss and that the winner of this game become the new Mortal Kombat champion. This would be the quintessential way for Mortal Kombat to transgress into the "next generation" I think it would be cool if Takeda becomes the next champion.

I think Lui Kang is too obvious a choice, i mean in MK 2011 they say hes a tyrannical fire god, i think thats too predictable
and i think Takeda will just be a playable character, I don't see him being the next champion at all, think we just got to see him first in the comic so everyones jumping to that

Liu Kang as boss isn't "predictable" to anyone but hardcore MK fans. When Boon speaks about these games, he is not only speaking to us. So when he said "surprising" as a description of the boss that doesn't mean it would be surprising to us hardcore fans. I think Liu Kang as the main bad guy/boss of the game would come as quite a surprise to the majority of casual players, despite his arcade ending from MK9.
I still think he is the most likely.

FerraTorr brings up a good point. I was about to comment saying Liu Kang would be way too obvious and predictable but I wasn't thinking about the casual fans, to them that probably would be quite a surprise.

It's Noob Saibot and I'm dead serious saying that.
If I'm right and Sub-Zero is Kuai Liang then there's no greater enemy for Scorpion/Sub-Zero(outside of Quan Chi) and since this game is about rising/falling from power I see Noob Saibot/Havik taking advantage of a weakened Netherrealm and Noob rises to power.
I'm still placing him as my #1 bet.

My guesses (in order from most likely to less):
- Mad Liu Kang (if he is still around, he will be MAD with Raiden and will probably try something so crazy that even his Earthrealm allies will have to stop him).
- Daegon (quickly ascended in the list after seeing so much Red Dragon influence in latest news and comics, he could even succeed on keeping Taven on his slumber and somehow get Blaze's power for himself without needing a full battle of the Armageddon or the pyramid).
- Dark Raiden (even Scorpion knows that people die when he acts, this guy could crack at any moment and go nuts).
- Quan Chi (descended on my list after knowing he is losing his revenant "army" after the first arc in the game and will likely return to whispering on big baddies ears and scheming in the shadows).
Considering that the villian is going to be both "classic" and "unexpected", I'm not listing any new character or characters like Shinnokh.

That was pretty much my assessment as well.
I'd replace Quan Chi with Shujinko, though. Fully powered Shujinko who actually uses his powers creatively could be an unstoppable beast, and whatever goals he's pursuing in this new continuity, I very much doubt they coincide with Raiden's plans.

For some reason. I have a creepy feeling its a super powerful version of Shinnok.
Boon said it'll be someone we don't expect.
Everyone who played MK9 expects to see Shinnok. As much as I want him to be the unstoppable SNK boss he was always meant to be, I'm not sure if he'll even be that much of a threat past the initial Netherrealm War arc. Hell, he'll probably be playable.
