Japanese name pronunciations...

posted02/28/2015 02:06 AM (UTC)byHattorisOkay, so this morning's trailer was amazing... I've lost track of how many times I've played the damn thing!
But one thing that's bugged me since voice acting has become more prominent in the series is how the voice actors pronounce certain Japanese names/words.
For starters, I keep hearing "Shirai RAI-OO" instead of "REE-OO", but I figured I'd let this slide. But poor Takeda... instead of pronouncing his name "TAH-KAY-DA", both Sub-Zero and Cassie keep calling him "TAH-KEE-DA". The more they say it and the faster they say it, the more I hear "taquito" and get hungry.
I know this is a minor nitpick, but just something that always jumped out at me. Meh, oh well... random observation for the day.

I'm still going to pronounce Tak-EH-da regardless haha.

And that's how I've read it in my head in the comics

My friend who is Japanese says that's how you pronounce that name. I always thought that's how you pronounced it anyway.

The first time I watched the trailer I missed so many of the cameos cause I was so annoyed at how they pronounced Takeda.
Like seriously, if you're a writer and you're going to create Asian characters (or characters of any nationality), it is your job to do 10 seconds of research and learn how to pronounce the character's name.

Remember in the 1994 Street Fighter movie, when Bison was the ONLY character who pronounced Ryu's name correctly?

Well, considering everyone's been fucking up Raiden's name since day one, are we really surprised?
