This thought kinda just struck me, actually.

Since the game expands through 25 years, it kinda sounds like NRS are looking to wrap up the MK storyline for good. Many of the MK characters are either immortal or have long lifespans, but the human characters will eventually be replaced with the next generation. Cassie Cage is just one example of such.

So either MKX is the last game of the series, or the next MK will have the human characters replaced with new characters. That means goodbye to Sonya, Johnny, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Kabal, Kano, Stryker, Nightwolf, Jax, Kenshi, Frost, Jarek, Hsu Hao, Kira, Kobra, Kai and Shujinko.

Alot of these characters probably won't even be in MKX, so I think MKX is the game preparing us to say goodbye to these characters... forever.

Is MKX the next game or maybe preparing us for a whole new generation of MK characters? What do you think?

"Is MKX the FINAL Mortal Kombat game?"

Not by a long shot. Plus the post-MKX game can have the potential to reintroduce older character pre-MK9 that could mingle in with the MK veterans and the MKX newbies if the latter survive. I'd wait for the entire story walkthrough to come out on Youtube to resolve everything.

This.

This isn't the end of the line for MK, dude. MK will continue on for many years I'm sure. Who knows, the franchise may continue on past Boon. Especially now that WB owns it.

If anything this is a new beginning the way I see it. I see Mortal Kombat(2011) as the send-off/farewell to the old MK Trilogy cast. Does that mean all of the people who died in MK9 will never return? Certainly not. However, I think this installment with it's timeline jump and promise of a bunch of new characters is attempting to move on past Trilogy in a way the franchise has still not done.

Not by a long shot. Mortal Kombat 9 resurrected the studio and was a massive success. Mortal Kombat X is building upon that platform. Mortal Kombat is the mainstay of the studio so I see no reason why this game will be the last.

Or it could prove to be MK's ultimate downfall given Midway's reckless twists such as killing off Liu Kang in Deadly Alliance (which by luck turned out to boost the fanbase at the time). Will this new direction spare the franchise or crash it down this time is the question. I kind of have a uncomfortable feeling that older fans will suddenly revile the series for its progression in the near future and abandon it little by little, but lets hope that doesn't happen. Plus I never said MKX would be the final MK game as indicated by "Not by a long shot"

So the overall feeling isn't that it will be the end of Mortal Kombat, but rather the end of the Trilogy era characters?

Yup. Also, reread my post, krajax. I wasn't saying that you said this would be the final game.

Alright my apologies then.

It's going to be a problem for the studios to create new characters in the future. All of the obvious clichés have been taken: Mercenary, arms dealer, military soldier, cop, ninja, assassin, vampire, werewolf, warrior princess, reptilian, insectoid, Native American, black, white, Asian martial artist, Hollywood actor, god, sorcerer, warlord, samurai, anarchist etc.

Maybe NRS will do the same as Arc System did when making Blazblue. Each character more or less covered the same ground as those in Guilty Gear, but had a new spin on it.

Definitely not. If you read and watch the interviews with Boon, it seems clear that to him, MK is a video game first and a story second. The mythology has always been the icing on the cake, and though he's probably extremely proud of it, his dream seems to be to create an amazing experience. He said very explicitly in an interview years ago that they decided the roster first and then wrote the story afterwards. That may have changed over the years, but if you look at the previous games, I don't think it has.
EDIT: also, it's not up to NRS when MK ends. It's up to Warner Bros, and the profits speak for themselves. MK isn't going anywhere.

The thought of wondering how many would react if this was indeed the last game is truly frightening.

Despite that many have said that this isn't... I kinda wonder what happens if it was.

I had the feeling Mortal Kombat was just getting kickstarted again after MK9. I do think though that they are going to cut ties with a number of characters.

Actually I have pondered this as well.

I think the most diplomatic solution to this problem would be the ending of the MK storyline, while not necessarily the title.

The MK story already showed us that it cannot go on indefinitely, just look at the inevitable, but also forced conclusion that Armageddon was. Actually it was already in planning as MKDA TE and MKD Unchained already had allusions to Blaze and the whole Argus plan (Kitana, Blaze endings).

It was pretty apparent that they wanted to conlcude the story and start fresh, but the Midway mandate forced Armageddon out before it could have been fully developed.

I think that there might be a whole design shift - - -> what imho could finally put the story to rest. Though if the bitch of a fanbase MK has that would also be catastrophic.

MK will continue as long as its profitable. Storyline or developers desire are irrelevant.

It should be really strange assumption, that publisher will kill popular franchise just because there is no more story. It's stupid. Especially nowadays.

Unchained was developed at the same time as MKA and released later, so it's not surprising, that new endings alluded to the MKA's story.

No.

And also not from the trilogy area, they will never give up on Scorpion and Sub-Zero, I fear the other more awesome characters tho.

Sub-Zero's will just have new characters with the same name (CHEAP alarm) and Scorpion is undead so never dies.

The humans, well if they follow this timeline they will all die (not Nightwolf tho, he's not really human and already lives for a long time.)

I have a feeling Liu Kang will become a god, so another boring character is saved from doom.

Sektor and Cyrax probably are immune to ageing as well.

Cage can become a god.

The only characters I pity dying are Kano and Kabal, but they can maybe enhance their own life with inventions.

Im sick of new games,I want everything on one disc. If they wanna do more story, then add it through dlc. Im tired of losing good kharacters every game when they can just keep expanding n make it the best game out there.

If this game was about a conclusion, there wouldn't be any need for so much new elements and characters. Looks like he beginning of a new era of MK. Many to come!

That ́s about right I think. In the past, I ́ve been thinking MK ́s legacy would have ended. Especially after Armageddon. MK wasn ́t top notch (not by a long shot). I feared the end of the series was close that time, at least that;s how I experienced it.

But hey, MK revived! MK9 was the best selling games in the entire series, MK X shows good promiss. I don't see it ending anytime soon. As for it being the end of the Trilogy era... Yeah, maybe. Will they actually do it? I'm not sure yet. Time will tell. But they have been bringing back characters from the dead throughout the series. It's all up to NRS. Personally I'd like to see them doing it. See whatever they can bring us.

I will tell you what happened to that:

It's not "champions" plural, it's "champion", singular. It applies only to the guy who actually wins the tournament.

That's Liu Kang.

Except in both the old timeline and the new, he was murdered afterward. Whether or not you age doesn't matter if you're dead.

Also, there no longer IS a Mortal Kombat tournament between Earthrealm and Outworld for the champion to defend his title at.

Shang talked Raiden into changing the stakes in MK2, remember? They abandoned the ten-in-a-row rule for all-or-nothing. If Kahn won, he's get Earthrealm, if he lost, he'd lose his claim FOREVER. Well, he lost.
