The most likely characters to return will be:

Sub-Zero: or else it might be some other lin kuei member, but the freezing ability will definately be in the new game.

Scorpion: same type deal as Sub-Zero

Reptile: same as above but it could be his offspring

Raiden: he has great potential to be as evil as shang tsung if not more.

Liu Kang: he could be the new "voice of reason" character since Raiden is evil.

Shang Tsung---as long as he can morph, he will be a good boss and be my favorite character.
Scorpion----if mortal kombat had no scorpion, it will be just stupid!
Noob-smoke-----two reasons, noob and smoke, they are powerful, evil, and they were united in MKD.
Kitana----kitana will always be in mortal kombat as long as she kept her beuty and power.
Mileena-----she made a perfect enemy for kitana

Subzero- wants to defeat noob and try and make him good
Scorpion- wants to kill quan chi
Noob Saibot- wants to kill scorpion
Quan Chi- wants scorpion dead
Shao Khan- would be the main boss

the ending could go like this scorpion is fighting quan chi in shao khan's throne room noob is behind scorpion about to rip of his head off but sub zero kicks noob and the two start to fight scorpion knocks quan chi down to his knees and breaks his neck then sub zero freezes noobs legs to the ground and kicks his head knocking him out then shao khan comes into his throne room and begins to attack both sub zero and scorpion he nearly kills them but sub zero freezes him then scorpion takes off his mask and breathes fire on shao kahn melting him and then it finaly ends with subzero clasping hands with scorpion
