Actually was it stated that he left? Becaus ein the original he was a member of the W. L. Society and he wasn't explicitly stated to be a part of the temple, only that he fought for them.

Well I can't speak for MK9, but yeah, it was part of Tobias's original canon that he left the Shaolin to join the White Lotus and is thus considered a "renegade".

And since the Shaolin were all killed in MK2 and he and Kung Lao were responsible for rebuilding and recruiting a new generation of monks, they could've pretty much made the rules whatever they wanted, like "long hair and sex are allowed now", lol.
