If I May Speculate on the Roster...

I didn't see a thread to post speculation in, so I thought I'd simply make my own. I see a lot of people throwing around "leak" lists and stuff, but they pretty much just look like people listed everyone who has appeared in the comics and called it good. Another thing blowing my mind is how low these roster counts are. I've seen 24-28 mostly, but I distinctly recall someone from NRS early on saying that the roster would contain "thirty-something" characters, and that we're getting even or roughly even numbers of both new and returning characters. I'm going to assume for the sake of my list that new means brand new, not post-MK3 or brand new, and I'm going to go with 34 characters for my guess at the on-disc roster size based on these statements.

So, let's get the obvious ones out of the way. These characters are confirmed to be playable and are returning:

Scorpion
Sub Zero
Reptile
Raiden
Quan Chi
Kano
Kitana
Kung Lao
Ermac
Mileena

Goro being DLC/pre-order, one could argue he shouldn't be on my list, but since he's likely to be a boss character, I think that makes him on-disc, and I'm going to count him. That brings us to eleven returning characters, leaving us with six slots left, by my own estimations.

These characters are brand new and confirmed:
Cassie Cage
Jacqui Briggs
Takeda Takahashi
Kung Jin
Kotal Kahn
D'Vorah
Erron Black
Ferra/Tor

That's eight there, which brings the total from both groups up to 19. This leaves me with fifteen characters, six of which are preexisting. The following are speculative only:

Johnny Cage
Shinnok
Reiko
Rain
Sonya Blade
Fujin

These were hard to choose. I'm wondering if maybe the "new characters" could be including post-MK3 characters afterall. Kenshi, Jax, Baraka, Smoke, Cyrax, Sektor, Bo' Rai Cho, Mavado, and Daegon all also seem like possibilities to me, some more than others. But let's continue.

Obviously, I won't know the names of all of the brand new characters. But I'd like to guess at what roles they might fill.

Forrest Fox
Earthrealm God (Fire, Water, or Earth)
Black Dragon #1
Brotherhood of Shadow Agent #1
Brotherhood of Shadow Agent #2
Kamidogu Wielder
Elder God #1 (primary villain)
Elder God #2
Wild Card

The Elder God characters are swings in the dark, but it'd be nice to see. I'm thinking one of the gods from SZM might get a character. We'll also need Brotherhood of Shadow members to represent the Netherrealm War. And since the Kamidogu are playing such an important role, I think we'll see at least one new character who controls and wields one of the other Kamidogu daggers.

Well, this is what I'm anticipating. DLC will be Tremor, someone else who will sell well, like Bo' Rai Cho or Havik, and two guest characters because life is cruel. Oh, cut one character from either list above and put in some shitty guest character, because life is crueler.
I see you've give to a lot of trouble to construct your post. Firstly, thank you for your efforts. I think the game has WAY too many returnees. I thought the idea was that only a handful would survive from the last instalment. Admittedly, there are certain some staples that require a roster spot, however, characters like Mileena, Baraka, Sonya and Cage should be...um...caged! These characters have had their time and they need to move along and make way for new blood. There certainly are characters of former years that have a lot of potential. Shinnok and Reiko are two examples. By applying objective analysis, I believe these two are shoe-ins. So much evidence substantiates this. A bit over a month and we'll see.

There's such a small amount of time until the game comes out. I'm really impressed by how well NRS has kept a lid on things. I've always been bad with these kinds of secrets. lol.

Mileena is not yet confirmed as a playable.

Anyway I agree with the previous poster that it's time to put a lid on the old characters and an infusion of more fresh blood is needed. The likes of Mileena, Johnny (though I like him), Jax, Rain, Fujin, etc. are old and tired, and the game has to cater to more than just obsessed fanboys. And if Tremor is included as DLC or whatever, it will represent a low point in this series.

How is fujin old and tired? Hes been in only 2 games as a playable character.

My expectations have lowered significantly. I'd welcome whatever character that isn't MK1-2 at this point.

Yah, and only one of those had any storyline for him. Fujin is most definitely not old and tired. Neither is Rain, who has only been in three games. And Tremor looks likely as DLC because of the petition, which Ed Boon has acknowledged. And I have to say, I don't see how your opinion that old characters should be phased out has any relevance on who is likely to be in the game. I personally don't care who gets in, I just want the storyline to be well written. If this means moving on to a new generation of characters, fine, do it. If that means bringing back the MK9 cast over and over again, fine.

My list simply reflects who I think are most likely to be in the game. NRS said there would be roughly equal representation of old and new. So that's what I took a stab at. And any character in this game will play differently than they have before because no previous game has given every character three unique fighting styles in this format.

MK:DA-MK:A had multiple fighting styles, but those were 3D, and heavily generic and reused from character to character. This is a first. Anyone will feel fresh. Kung Lao feels fresh. Quan Chi feels fresh. There's no reason to assume Johnny Cage won't feel fresh. He's Earthrealm's new Champion. I'm sure he has some new tricks up his sleeve.

I'm sure you're both fine with Scorpion and Sub Zero being in the game. More-so, I'm sure most people clamoring for "new blood" and to purge the old would also lose their collective minds if either of those two weren't in the game. Don't instill double standards because your favorite old characters are in so now you can comfortably say fuck everybody else.

I'll just stop there.

Show me all of the roster threads that have been posted in the last three days, then. I see dozens of threads for specific characters, I see threads about babalities, I see threads about the trailer. I don't see anything saying, "This is what I expect, who do you expect?" So I made one.

The third one is from a week ago. Two is a lot less than forty. Still, thanks for the links. I'm going to go read those threads now. I didn't see them when I searched, but now I know they're there.

Someone else already mentioned Mileena, but Erron Black has also not been officially confirmed as playable yet. He's been shown in Story Mode only thus far and that isn't an actual playable confirmation.

You've also forgotten Goro, he does still count.

The rest of your playable list is correct OP.
