Here's my story of what i would like the next MK game to be:

After the defeat of the Dragon King, Shang Tsung and Quan Chi were thought to have been completely detroyed. However, Shang Tsung was still alive. He had no souls in him, since they all were released when Raiden blew everything up, so he was left powerless. In order to get his power back, he returned to his old plans. He went about the realms recruiting opponents to compete on his island once again in Mortal Kombat, only to consume their souls when they die.

Also, Reptile returns after Shang Tsung finds his body in the Dragon King's chamber. Reptile believes Shang Tsung saved him so his agrees to be his body guard once again. Scorpion also agrees to help the sorceror in turn having Shang Tsung to release him from his curse.
