This is my theory... we're going to skip over the MK4 saga. Here's why:
-MK2011 ends with Shinnok meeting Quan-Chi, declaring it will soon be time to invade. Presumably this event takes place immediately after MK2011 when Raiden's forces are still weak. Somehow, Raiden and his remaining allies (Cage, Sonya, Kenshi, Fujin etc.) manage to defeat him. This would be the opening scene or the first chapter of Story Mode.
Now...
-The MKX comic begins at least 15 years after the so-called "Netherrealm Wars" (Shinnok's invasion??). Characters such as Takeda and Cassie Cage are still kids at this point in the storyline. I presume the 25 year storyline is going to take place from the end of Shinnok's invasion up until current events.
-Onto my point, this could be used to explain WHY Kung Lao, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Jax etc. are alive now. Perhaps they were resurrected as "wraiths" by Quan-Chi but upon Shinnok's defeat, their souls were freed and they were returned to the land of the living.
Maybe Kung Lao disappeared for ten years or something, after the Netherrealm Wars. Cassie Cage and Jacquie Briggs could have been conceived not long after the invasion as well.

Yeah I think the Netherrealm War more than likely has something to do with the dead characters returning.

ya thats what i've been saying this whole time, and why MKx's sub-Zero is Bi-Han
I find strange that Raiden implies they are still dead in chapter #2
"There are far fewer of you than there once one" with a picture of Sonya and Cage.
But then we later see in chapter 4 that Jax has been alive for years, he's got a teen daughter...so...

Maybe because no one likes Raiden anymore, so he was only referring to the ones who help him, not the good guys overall

I really think Shinnok's invasion will be extremely glossed over. I get a strong feeling that he won't play much of a role in the story let alone be a playable character. People expecting him to make a big wave are setting themselves up for disappointment.

Yup, he'll definitely appear in the game but will he be playable?
Only if you consider having his skull strapped to Quan Chi's chest playable :p

Recall that as of MKX Raiden has had no idea where Kung Lao has been. It's possible he doesn't even know some people are alive, or that in his case he's been back for a while.
Even if he does, we've got up to Liu Kang, Kabal, Stryker, Nightwolf, Smoke, and maybe one of the Sub-Zeroes (recall "I have your brother's soul!") could possibly be considered dead or MIA at this point it time.
Best case scanario he's got tabs on Johnny, Sonya, Jax, maybe Kung Lao and Kitana. 3-5 people ain't a lot.

Yeah, I really don't get the hate. In the original timeline Armageddon happens and pretty much everyone dies. In the new timeline he manages to save a few. In my book that's an improvement.

That better not be the case. They wouldn't tease him at the end of MK9, just to have a cameo in MKX. He will play a huge role in the story and either be playable from the main roster or he is the big bad.

I agree, I don't know why Raiden gets so much flak. He's become like a scapegoat for people butthurt about the canon.

I thought about too but after looking at the skull again in a bigger screen I don't think it's Shinnok, that skull has large fangs. I don't recall Shinnok ever having those. It seems like the skull and arms are just for decoration or an Oni Quan Chi killed.
Plus, why would he let his guard down if he realizes Quan Chi would betray him. I think it would suck. Shinnok has potential, but was made the wrong way with being a Shang Tsung clone.
Going back to the dead characters, I think some of them retired and most who were resurrect wanted nothing to do with Rayden seeing how he wasn't there when they were getting killed by Sindel.

Lol and I agree with you both. That skull on Quan Chi's chest gives me a bad feeling. I highly doubt Quan would just wear a random skull, it has to have some significance. Also (from that German magazine) didn't each faction have a picture of its leader and brotherhood of the shadow had Quan, not Shinnok. I think MK9 ensured that the Netherrealm would invade but that does not ensure Shinnok will play a prominent role and for sure does not ensure the invasion itself would be a big part of the story. MK9 was a retelling of the MK story, MKX will not be. MKX is going in a completely new direction. If we see Fujin revealed or any 3d era character then Shinnok's stock would slightly increase, but until then imo things look very bleak for him. I really hope I'm wrong tho, Shinnok's my favorite from MK4 and I think he has a shit ton of potential.

Tazer _ gunshot I really doubt Shinnok is the final boss of MKX. first Ed says it's a suprise returning character. Shinnok wouldn't be a suprise. Second the MK comic begins after the Neatherrrealm War AKA Shinnok's invasion. So in story mode it'll begin, with shinnok and go forward 25 years. I expect whatever demon Raiden talks about in thr comic could be the big bad. Part of, me, wants to say Noob Saibot coming from the Soulnado more powerful

Quan Chi just wants to control what ever he wants to control until it backfires on him later on in the story. I have a feeling either Argus or Shang Tsung will kill Quan Chi.

No, there was always gonna be dead characters.
I mean, who would you fight in story mode's Netherrealm War chapters if there aren't any dead guys on the roster? Scorpion, Quan Chi and Shinnok ad infinitum?

In the comic doesnt Fujin say something along the liens of 'Couldnt you ahve done taht before they died' when he heals Fujin.
Maybe Raiden just ressurects of 'heals' them of Quan Chis sorcery.

They are in because they are from the trilogy era(the only era that matters in mk and the best) so they must return. Fuck everyone else. Trilogy FTW!
