Heres an idea I came up with for what the story on Kotal Kahn might be...

So, I was just thinking about the Kotal Kahn character, reading different comments here about him. The article from the German gaming magazine may or may not have indicated he is Shao Kahn's son. Some think it may have meant he is a successor or heir, not his literal son. The article also seemed to indicate that Kotal Kahn is "Mayan" but most people here(myself included) seriously doubt he is supposed to be an actual Mayan.

While mulling those facts over the following scenario popped into my head: What if Kotal Kahn is not supposed to be an actual Mayan but instead an actual Mayan deity?

The Mayan god of war, Buluc Chabtan:

Looks a lot like our boy, right?

According to legend, Buluc Chabtan was a malevolent god.

What if Kotal Kahn is actually supposed to be the Mayan god of war? Raiden is known by different names to different cultures. What if, with no people to rule over & fear him after the demise of the Mayans, Buluc left Earth to travel the realms in search of a new people to rule? And after many centuries of roaming the realms/heavens, Chabtan is in the right place at the right time when Shao Kahn's demise leaves a power vacuum in Outworld? Maybe the former Earth god becomes Outworld's new god of war and ruler?

Thoughts? I just thought the idea of a god from one realm travelling to another realm and taking over is interesting and it is a way to explain both the Kahn and Mayan connections.

Mayan dieties do not have coporal forms because only in spirit form can they become omnipresent.

...really? This is a game with robots, vampires, sorcerers, demons etc.

I think it's not too much of a stretch for a Mayan god to have a corporeal form, considering Raiden (obviously) has one.

So? He's a god. WHY can't a Mayan god have a corporeal form? Because YOU say so? Is that something specifically stated in Mayan mythology? If so, A)why then are Mayan gods depicted as corporeal beings and B) can you provide a source for that?

You're being way too overly critical here, dude. This is Mortal Kombat, not an attempt to accurately portray Mesoamerican mythology. Raiden is inspired by Japanese deities.

I'm sorry but that is a silly objection. It almost seems like you're trolling or being negative for the sake of it.

... Hope all that made you feel SO smart.

Anyways FerraTorr, I think that's a pretty cool idea. Even if it is just a small stretch, it's MK, it's a game, make it cool and give it some good backstory, idc if it's 100% on par with OUR reality. That's why it's a game.

I want to see what Boon has to say about Kotal ourselves, not just some rough translation, should be cool.

Thanks, man! And I agree, we need to see/hear his actual words in English about this.

Did I say a Mayan god could not? I said Mayan dieties do not have corporal forms. There is a difference.

I am not being overly critical at all. I said one fact and you have a hissy fit.

For sure and that's killer, but I was meaning about where exactly he is from and what he did before he was the new ruler, and if he is actually Shao's son or not.

You were dismissing my idea...what else was the reason for bringing it up otherwise? You were being argumentative. Okay, so according to you Mayan deities do not have corporeal forms. So what?

Another thing a few other users noticed on here is that his skin is not actually green, but painted on. Some of the high resolution images actually show some of the paint cracking and chipping around his eyes.

Not sure what it means exactly, but it does raise some questions.

U do know that all 3 of his variations have the word "god" in it right? So I think it's pretty darn obvious he is a deity. I also think that he is inspired by the Aztek God Quetzalcoatl (coatl = KotaL)

As for owning 3 different elements (blood, Sun, & war)... My own theory is that he kills other gods and steals their essence. He could be after Raiden & Fujin during the storyline.

Didn't the Mayans disappear mysteriously? I think I remember reading this in high skool. Archeologists can't figure out where they went.... Kuz they went to OutWorld! LoL

You're wrong! They could have acquired some alien technology and become astronauts, transporting themselves to Outworld! In other words as Tsoukalos puts it, ALIENS :B
