Sure, they got different weapons, looks, and specials, but what about personalities? They did a decent job with this in MK vs DC (Scorpion: Angry and vengeful; Sub-Zero: Cool [lol], businesslike, laid back; Jax: Soft-spoken, smart black guy; Sonya: Hotheaded second in command), but their mentalities should shine during the fights to make people identify with them more.

Question is, how would you go about doing this?

It would be tricky. Maybe a little talking while fighting would be cool. Just a one-liner here and there. I think it would be cool if the standard punches and kicks had a little more flare to them. Like Sub's punches would freeze and shatter on impact. It would look awesome in a combo with pieces of ice flying through the air. Or maybe if you do a 5 hit combo with like Scorpion, by the 3rd hit his fists and feet would be on fire.

I like your ideas hezikiah. Buy to go a step further let's say your in the gameplay facing these characters...

You fight scorpion: He should fight angry. He should be about relentless pressure. Combos in which he throws everything he has into his picked and kicks. Good blocking is key to stoping scorpion. Kinda like a ninja Mike Tyson. His famous quotes should be there as well. He is part demon afterall. It should scare you to fight him. Lol

You fight subby: Smart fighter with patience. Very rarely gets blocked. Very hard puncher due to his icy hands. Should even be harder to defeat because he is so strong willed. So give him more health.

Liu Kang: Elusive. Tricky. More Kung Fu like. If you were to be very good with Liu Kang you would win the majority of the time. Extremely hard to block any of his melée attacks. Also very quick.

I just think These are pretty cool ideas

Yea those are some good ideas. It could really work, you would just have to balance all the characters out so any character could actually put up a fight with the best if used right.i think MK would be the greatest fighting game ever if the fans made it.hahaha
Needs an invisible type guy. Not fully, only the hands/feet would be visible.
Using a greenscreen suit, you could make the arms/legs connected by energy or something. Maybe a plasma/robotic type thing.

How about a marionette? A puppet, with strings going off the top of the screen.

I've been complaining about this for years now, but Ed Boon never listens.
The following can add personality to a character:

-talking during the fight
-small intro scene before a fight
-unique move-set for everybody(nobody shares the same kicks, jabs etc...)
-different body-types/looks (is it just me or is everyone almost the same height in MK, not including the bosses?)

talking...well you already know I like that idea.
intro scene...i think it would really be cool at first but after awhile it would get old. diff movesets...in MKvsDC i think everyone did except for during close and freefall combat.
diff. body types...yea i noticed that, it would be cooler if like Shang Tsung was taller than most of the "standard" fighters.

Shang Tsung would be shorter than the average, actually. He was in MK1 and 2, anyway.

At any rate, I've been wanting intros and victory poses with quotes and the ability to taunt during the fight since they added the bowing intros in MK4. Every other fighting game has that feature now, it's way overdue.

I think personality can be brought out through the way they fight (as far as the artificial intelligence is concerned).

Like others have mentioned, through little speech dialogue and the animations that go with it.

And of course, in the way they present them during FMV biographies and endings. wink

Taunts and celebration poses COULD go a long way towards making things more interesting. They don't even have to be goofy like Street Fighters, or overblown like Soul Calibur's, just as simple as stuff like:

During the match, Mileena takes off her veil to snap and growl at the opponent. Johnny Cage, well he'd stand on one foot while talking trash.

After he wins, Jax dusts off his hands as if to say, "Well, that takes care of that."

I'd imagine Sub-Zero would just freeze the ground and slide away after a fight. He's a ninja, after his business is taken care of what would he waste his time celebrating for?

Raiden probably wouldn't show off too much either. I'd imagine just a witty quip at the end as he walks away.

Street Fighter and BlazBlue pull this off flawlessly. E. Honda the sumo wrestler has more character shi ing in a match then every MK character not named Shao Kahn

taunts are cheesy (think King of Fighters) and fight intros like in Tekken 5 could get boring in the long run but I do like equipping each fighter with different movesets, celebration poses, etc. Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition had the latter elements in spades, not even Tekken could achieve the level of subtlety in the personalities of that game and the MK Team would do well to follow that standard.

To Chrome: Your probably right but I meant Scorpion should fight with the same intensity of Tyson during the late 80s. I'm not saying scorpion should go from ninja to a power punching boxer. Although I could see Jax fighting exactly like Mike. But Jax has never claimed to be a ninja.

This. Different body types and unique animations for all characters including jumps/walk/crouch. I cannot believe all the animation sharing that was still present in the last game.

I'm the type of guy who is impressed by the big things (graphics, the main gameplay) and is won over by the smaller details. After thoroughly playing Super Street Fighter IV, I can say that I agree with this sentiment. All the little touches in how differently the characters move and attack, with all their own voice actors (which I liked in MK vs DC), and their own post battle quotes. I think I can say that I've been enjoying SSFIV more than I did MK vs DC.

Especially the rival fights. The banter beforehand and the mid battle taunts make those particularly memorable. I'm not saying I'd want MK9 to ape SSFIV, that'd be stupid. But if it could integrate some of these features without being a rip-off, I'd fucking love it.
