Well, if he isn't saying anything, I don't think anyone knows what it is yet. Game Informer will have something on it within the next three months, though, I'm sure of it.

Im starting to worry that this is going to be a Mortal Kombat FPS.
Boon did say it will be a fighting game, but after that, everything goes out the window. So im wondering ( especially considering they are using the UTIII engine and using Gears of War's art style ) if you are going to be running around from the first person , throwing out scorpion spears into plasma gun blasts.

Yeah you make a good point there. This thing could be F#$@en earthshaking.
Using Unreal Engine doesn't mean the game is going to be a FPS or TPS.
Come on guys, don't be stupid. This is Mortal Kombat.
Anyhow, whatever Boon was talking about better be something new, and groundbreaking. Something that will make Steet Figher and Tekken fans say, "holly fuckin shit, that's insane".

Unbelievably unexpected? Hmm, I really hope that this isn't just another gimmick. It seems like ever since MK3 came out, the MK series has tried to wow fans with a new gimmick, and it's always the gameplay that suffers for it.
MK4 went 3D and featured weapons, the move options were bare bones and the fighting was relatively simple compared to other 3D fighters. MK:DA had 3 styles per character, but none of those styles were deep and none of them really featured moves that were specific to that style (how did the wrestling style for example on have 3 throws??). MK:D focused alot on the atmosphere, but the new feature was the backgrounds and the death traps. This may have added to the strategy options, but still added nothing to the actual fighting and I would argue, it made the gameplay a little less relevant. MK:A added to the gameplay by featuring mid-air combos, but c'mon, it was just a dial-a-combo that wasn't on the ground.
MK should stop trying to revolutionize the fighting genre and start concentrating on revolutionizing Mortal Kombat. Again, I have no idea what this unexpected thing might be, but it should be giving every character their own unique moves, several throws per character, and good, balanced gameplay with everything from a ground game, to good counters, parries, animation etc.
I'm starting to worry that with the MK team wiping the slate clean again, they'll be spending so much time on making the graphics great, building a new storyline with mostly new characters and new modes (as well as this unexpected thing) that the gameplay will suffer for it as has been the case in the past. I'm not trying to be negative this long before the game comes out, but given the history behind these new ideas and the effects they actually wind up having, my optimism is fading a little with this announcement.

Unbelievably unexpected eh?
I'm going with: no ninjas or Mortal Kombat being an actual tournament with rules that can't be broken by sorcerers and war hungry tyrants.
Yeah, sarcasm is hard over the internets.

Since the MK team just love mini games sooo much, MK8 will just be test your might/sight,puzzle kombat and chess combat and motor kombat combined into one game:) SOUNDS SUPER!!!!!!!!!!
Do you want to know what it is? Game Informer Magazine will tell this in there next issue but a few lucky ones that get to see this first and get the heads up.
I work at the parts department somewhere and have a little access to my favorite game series MK.
The game is going to be 3D characters and 2D backgrounds making it a realistic as possible detail but also bringing back the 2D fightning but in an all new way.
Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile and Raiden will return.
2 fatalitys per person, and 1 animality.
This is a 100% serious MK game and very dark and gritty. The gameplay is going to be completely different than anything else done in the past.
Oh and by the way on the MK3 to present, how they just added cheezy features and made the gameplay suffer, get a life, its been that way since MK1. MK2 was a bigger better MK1 and MK3 added the "cheezy" RUN button, UMK3 was a big upgrade adding characters, MKT was adding all characters, MK4 was going with a 3D look but keeping the same gameplay, MKG was upgrade with more characters, MKDA was a complete change, then MKD kept the gameplay and changed up backgrounds and characters, MKA was the ultimate upgrade with all characters. blah blah blah,
anyway, if non of you all believe me, which is perfectly fine, just wait for the new game informer.

From Parts: "Oh and by the way on the MK3 to present, how they just added cheezy features and made the gameplay suffer, get a life, its been that way since MK1. What do you mean, get a life? You proved my point. I said that MK2 was an improvement over MK1 in every way with more of everything. Then in MK3 they added the pointless run button gimmick and dial a combos.
MK4 used the third dimention so poorly that it basically WAS a gimmick, same goes for the weapons which had extremely limited usage. MK:DA's 3 styles were pointless because all of the styles fought exactly the same way, so that was basically a gimmick. Of course, we also have the konquest mode, which to me seemed like a waste of time. Why put all of that effort into a practice mode?
MK:D added glorified ring outs, which in my opinion made the gameplay suffer. Then of course you have an adventure mode that, I'm sorry if this sounds too brutal, but it was ugly and not remotely fun to play.
MK:A added air combos which look hilarious, and not in a good way. You uppercut a guy in mid air and he spins around like he's in space. Gimmick.
Oh, and your UMK3 and MK Gold "big upgrades?" UMK3 added some characters and backgrounds. There was no tightening of the gameplay, no refinements or real changes. At least MK:T added the aggressor meter, not that it did much. MK Gold was a Dreamcast exclusive that was created specifically to sell MK as a next gen launch title. That's it. Again, no real upgrades to speak of over MK4.
The difference here is that when I say that MK2 was better than MK1 in every way, I mean it. MK2 had more characters, backgrounds, graphics, more fatalities, secrets etc. But most importantly, it had better gameplay. Better juggles, better collision detection, smoother animation and more options on offense and defense (baraka's blade fury, kitana's fan lift and square wave, the roundhouse, jax's backbreaker, scorpions air throw etc). Put all that together and that's a true upgrade over a previous iteration.
So I'm not sure if you disagree or if you just think that what I'm saying is old news, but my whole point in recounting all of this stuff was simply to say that MK doesn't need a new gimmick, it needs great gameplay that the next game can build upon like every other good fighting series has done for over a decade now.
I know I'm coming off like I hate this series or whatever and I don't. I like all of the games that I mentioned, I just wish that the MK team would stop trying to reinvent the genre and just put out the best playing game possible. I know they've always tried to do both, but I just think that with a new graphics engeine on new next gen hardware with a lot of new characters and a new story, that they should just try and limit the scope, because from that list alone, it looks like they have a mountain of a task as far as bringing out a great game is concerned.

Oh, and Parts, I'm not going to dismiss your insider info right away. I'm not going to jump down your throat or anything like that for claiming to be with Midway, I mean, I get Game Informer, so I (along with everyone else on this board) will know pretty soon if you were lying. So I'll dismiss the notion that you're BSing us.
You said that it'll be a 2D game set to 3D backgrounds, but that it'll play unlike anything we've seen before. Care to elaborate? So far that doesn't sound like anything new. Do you know the "secret" that Boon can't talk about?
You also named the returning characters and the fatalities. I can understand Sub, Scorpion and Rayden, but Reptile? Seems like an odd choice that they'd bring back THREE ninjas. Animalities? If they're trying to make it new, why would they bring back animalities? I just don't see humans turning into animals meshing well with an adult, dark and gritty theme. Who knows though.
To me, that info sounds a little fishy, but if you're right, and I open my Game Informer next month to see that all you've said is true, then I'll bump this thread just to apologize for doubting you. Of course, if MK isn't even in the next Game Informer or the info is way off base, I'll be first in line to bump this thread and call you out.
Any more bits of info to tide us over with while we're waiting?
