Character Select Screen

posted06/04/2014 05:25 PM (UTC)byDjangoDragWe'll likely get a peek at the character select screen at E3, and I'm psyched about that. I hope it's better than the MK9 version. Always thought it was boring. Here are some things I'd like to see. Share what you think!
I wanna see AWESOME portraits! And not with a universal background color. MK 1 -5 I think had individual backgrounds on the portraits. The models in the portraits also looked really sinister and forboding. I was missing that in MK9. After looking at the new Scorpion render, I'm hoping to see some truely wicked looking portraits.
I also wanna hear some thumping music. MK 1-3 had great character select themes. MK9 again let me down here. Wasn't driving or hype-inducing at all.
Will we see the big renders make a return? Will we see character models like the days of old? I'm curious to see this.
Also, with the announcement of Character Variations, how will this play into the Character Select screen? Will we see the MK4 rotating portraits making a return? That would be cool. :)
What do you guys think?

I'm definitely hoping we see the rotating portraits. That was a brilliant touch. I'm also looking forward to individual portrait backgrounds. Armageddon bored me with its bland colors for portrait back grounds. Hell, maybe we can get animated portraits or something?
I don't know, I just really want the select screen to once again feel unique and fresh. They have been quite basic in the past few games.

Well said on a lot of things.
I loved the individualized portrait backgrounds when I was a kid, and I'd be welcome to them coming back. Having a universal background color makes for an unappealing select screen in my mind.
On the topic of E3, I have very fond memories of when Deception was announced, a few months after that, that year's E3 happened. We all got a look at the select screen. and along with the people who were playable at the event, the select screen had darkened out silhouettes of everyone else. Seeing everybody speculate regarding who was who was a great thing. I think that sent my hype meter into overdrive. If we get something like that again, I'd be happy but at the same time, I want it to be as much of a surprise as possible.

Oh, and going off the the background portrait things, I loved in MK2 when they did stuff like this:
I don't know why I liked those backgrounds so much, but I still love them.

I was going to post about that! Seriously the darkened silhouettes were amazing and offered a many entertaining months of speculation. A few were obvious, but most were hard as hell to guess because we had to take into account there being new characters. I really hope they do that at E3 again. Good times indeed.

Yeah, those Bios were awesome. Would love to see that come back.
MK2 still is the gold standard for character select screens for me. Shit looks baddass and evil.
This just had little to no character or personality and feels very stock.
For reference, I think this is what we saw at MK9's E3 reveal. Pretty much the final screen just with the universal shadow portraits.

I'd like to see the M,K, and X as block letters, as the select screen. I think it would be cool.
As much as Ed Boon loves innovation, I'm surprised he hasn't been innovative with the character select screen.
I'd love to see a unique character select screen this time around. The rows and pillars exist in almost every fighting game. I'd love to see something brand new.

That's not his fault. Blame whoever is in charge of the User Interface. I know Boon is the Creative Director, so the team is trying to follow his vision for the game. But Boon can't be responsible for every single thing.
The last character select I really liked was Darkstalkers 3.
I like the shape of the MKDA/MK9 character select screen because they allow for large renders on either side which look awesome.
Not a fan of the Armageddon style of character models appearing because they took a while to appear and looked kinda cheap. Maybe doing it today would be better though so I'm not totally against it.
Different backgrounds would be cool but could look messy with the amount of characters we will probably get.
Also with Injustice having rhombus shaped slots for characters who knows, we may get hexagonal character spaces, oh the possibilities!

Injustice had a pretty decent Select Screen. The announcer was pretty bad tho, as was the music.

I pretty much agree with what's already been said here. The character select screen in MK 2011 was just this bland, dark red screen. The music for it as well as most of the other themes of the game, were underwhelming and ultimately forgettable. I want the hype factor that MKD's select screen theme has, and I hope we get the distinct background portraits for each character. Also, I liked the insignia stuff for the characters like Injustice, and it would be nice to see a bit of that for MK X. Granted, these things are minor, but it would help with the ambiance of the game to do them well.

Agreed, with the caveat that it shouldn't be too obvious. Especially with MK:DA it got pretty obvious who some of the characters were early on. I don't actually want to know who anyone is until they announce it, but I do also want to enjoy guessing.
