Call me crazy, but is Sub-Zero...

posted06/10/2014 05:06 PM (UTC)byDjangoDragSo after watching the E3 trailer a bajillion times, it seems very much like Sub-Zero has a black face... like black, black.
Along with it sounding a LOT like he says "Maintaining OUR innocence", I'm starting to wonder. I'm never one to jump to conclusions based on tiny details, but might this Sub-Zero be someone else? A character known for having jet-black skin and glowing eyes...
Nah. Right?
Maybe this is one of those Character Variations in play.

Probably just a shadow.
You can see his face up close when Scorp hits him with a tree branch and it's normal skin colored.

It's not his alt costume he's just using the white mask which seems to be a game option like Scorpion choosing his swords, flames or summon amulet (Sub-Zero has either 2 emblems, kori blades or white mask). The rest of the costume is exactly the same and in that scene the illumination is just weird.

The bit with the weird mask seemed odd. Different than the rest of the trailer. Looks super low poly with low res textures. It could be from Story Mode. Still, odd.
I looked thru and saw that Sub's face is more normal sometimes. However on the bit where he gets whacked with the branch, he still looks a LOT like Noob in the face.
With that and all the new moves Im kinda thinking this Bi-Han Sub might be an Aggressive Character Variation. Perhaps Kuai Liang will be the Patient/Distance Variation. More like his style in MK9. This Sub seemed pretty aggressive.

I'm just happy the bandana-esque things at the back of Sub's head are present. Never understood why they weren't in the previous game. It looked sick in the MK9 art.

Totally agree, I was really happy when I saw them floating behind his head :D

Actually I saw a frozen mask that had different outlines than the mask in the prefight banter.
Also, sometimes it looked low-def, like the textures didn't load properly or did , but with latency. That is a common problem with FPS games when you suddenly turn your character and the CPU and the graph card begins to sweat under stress. Doom 3 had these issues, the textures came out low resolution first, and after a second or so corrected.

Textures being slow to load, gradually popping in during the game is a pretty famous problem with Unreal engine games. I'm surprised it never really happens in MK9 or Injustice. I guess this being an early build we can assume it won't be a problem in the final game?

I believe there were some edits and substantial texture upgrades from the initial trailer/builds of MK9 versus the final released product.
Remember Johnny's hair and the early skin textures?
I'm sure the crappy video quality doesn't help, though.
Edit:
Mobster_For_SATAN Wrote: Plus MK9 came out about 6 or so months after that trailer. It could have been even less. This game still has all of this year, and then some of next. Like an 8 month release. I'm surprised MKX looks this good already.
True.
I'm sure the game will look quite nice in the end; the environments already look gorgeous.
Graphics don't really make or break a game for me, though, so I'm not too concerned.

I too hope the graphics see an improvement. I'm no graphics snob, but some of those textures were like PS2 quality...

I think a lot of what we are seeing as bad quality is just because it is a film of a giant tv screen. NRS has not release this video in its pure form yet. It is still just a recording of an e3 presentation.

The engine itself has nothing to do with that though. If anything it would be an optimization flub, and the hardware is to blame.
As I said, the engine isn't as important, it's the hardware and how the program works with the hardware.

Arkham Knight looked great at Sony's Conference. MK looked okay. Hoping for some improvement.
