I am not sure how many of you are familiar with Kasumi Ninja, but if you are, then this would make a lot of sense.

So, in this game's arcade mode, you're only allowed to pick I believe two characters from the start. You cannot play any other character unless you beat them in a fight.

I was wondering, since not too many, myself included, does not always play as every single character in the game, would this kind of be interesting to help not only to give other characters a chance, but a new way in playing.

Sure, story mode kind of already gave us this, but if story mode wasn't around in the next game, would this concept be somewhat good?

I love unlocking characters, but:
1)this is not possible because of the nature of fighting games with online game. Many people will bitch about the lack of choice at the start of the game. This isn't a problem for me, but I'm just a drop in the ocean.
Damn, I know people that complained about Quan Chi and Cyber SUB being locked at the start of the game.
2)To enjoy a game, especially a fighting game, you really need to try every character at least once . For istance, I had no interest in guys like Rain or Jax...turns out they are my two mains in MK9.
3) rather than beating them, I'd rather "FIND" secret characters in the Krypt,in a Konquest/Story Mode or something like that.

Unlocking characters in MK DA was a true form of art, the first Krypt, although ugly artistic-wise, was the best for its content.
I still remember I was shocked when I've unlocked Frost with just 200 red koins.

It would only apply to arcade mode, it wouldn't have any effect on the rest of the game.

I don't think it would work for the fighting series now that they're serious about MK games being on the tourney scene, because tourneys need the game's characters to all be unlocked so the more tedious you make it, the worse it is for your game to get in.

But for another MK adventure game, that would be a fine way to go.

I think it's a great idea.

I also posted something somewhat similar, but unlocking them through a new Konquest Mode, as well as do the character Kombo Challenges before it allows you to play as that character, making it more of a prize than just finding a secret that someone else online already found/figured out.

Wow, Kasumi Ninja. Haven't heard that name in a while. I remember thinking how cool that looked when I first saw stuff on the Jaguar. Granted, I probably thought that it looked cool because it was a blatant rip off of MK, but still... I enjoyed it.

As for that method of unlocking, I personally like it alot. I loved that half of the roster was locked to start in MK:DA. Of course, I do think that there needs to be a code or something to get around this, if unlocking characters isn't your cup of tea.

But for the non-tourney players that want a more drawn out experience, I would have no problem starting out with two characters to choose from and then unlocking the remaining 22 or something like that.

Of course, for me, I also love finding things. So I don't want to simply pay to unlock them in the krypt. I also wouldn't want to be able to unlock all of them the same way. Maybe save three or four characters that require a different method for unlocking them. Give me clues on what to do to fight them and unlock them.

That would be ideal for me, but again, that's just me.

I love unlocking characters. Feels more rewarding than just having them available from the start.

Yeah I prefer the way it was done in Tekken 3 and 4. Where in order to unlock a character you had to beat the game with someone, and in order to unlock more characters you had to beat the game with a different character. I think it really forces you to actually learn how to play with everyone which I like.

I also agree that it is really rewarding to actually go through the process of unlocking characters.

Yeah, it's not only rewarding, it's just fun. I mean, if I'm given a fighting game where everything is available from the start, including ending cinemas, I can tell you that I'd probably get bored with it fairly quickly.

But give me a game where there are tons of secrets to find, characters, backgrounds, outfits etc to unlock and that's a game that I'll play a lot more. That concept isn't even unique to the fighting genre. People like discovering things, completing, getting more stuff and collecting. Those are all natural in video games and I think that MK nails a lot of these aspects.

I'm about two thirds of the way through the bonus challenge tower in the Vita version of MK and it seriously feels like I'm unlocking something new about every three or four levels. I love it and if it weren't for work, I'd be up all night playing it until I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore.

How much time did people gladly sink in to unlocking all 676 koffins in MK:DA's krypt? Even when you got something lame, you still knew that a new character or a new outfit or a new stage could be in that next unlocked koffin, and knowing that kept you going.

So yeah, give me a full huge game, and feel free to start me off with little to nothing in terms of content (characters, levels, outfits, endings etc) and I'll have a blast unlocking it all much more often then not.

It wouldn't hurt to have something this way, whether or not it's for the arcade mode or story mode.

I mean I'm one of those players who really would like to play the entire cast and such, but if they play like crap, I can't enjoy it. If there's a concept that has you playing as all of the characters and such, I'd personally enjoy it.

But if there isn't, well, there's really no reason for me to actually play as the other characters. Story mode had it for a bit, but unfortunately not all of the characters has a chance to shine in story mode.

I'd really like to see in MK10, the MOST DIFFICULT to unlock characters, that you couldn't hack/cheat to unlock them or even know they exist; I feel that DLC is the only possible key to that though.

Make the actual MK1/MK2 type rumors really happen, even if it's after the game comes out, add it in with a DLC pack/patch. Like actually hide a hidden fight with Hornbuckle on the "original" Pit 2 instead of just giving him to us right off the bat like with Skarlet, then to make him playable you must beat him in the fight and finish him.

Overall, we should really have to work hard for some of the characters even if it took over a year to actually get them.

Dragonkeeper, although that may be an interesting idea, alot of people would be pretty mad that you'd have to unlock the character after buying them, and i kinda agree. But im not sure why you think it would have to be dlc, because it could fit perfectly on the disc.

Sorry, I did actually mean it to be in a free patch/upgrade/nerf or add it with other characters that you actually get right off the bat, gotta admit that is one sneaky way to trick the world and they'd fall for it for damn sure, and possibly the only last way left to actually HIDE something that's NON-HACKABLE.

LOL, definitely wouldn't even give NRS the hint at going the cheap route Capcom did with UMvsC3 or SFxTekken, I'm just saying use it as a sneak tactic. Any other way, secrets are 100% definitely going to be found by hackers, just trying to save the grace of real SECRETS, which is really a good portion of what's keeping this game alive to this day, not all the way just somewhat. The NRS is pretty good at keeping us hyped and interested without spoiling us too much, well MK9 was f@ckin amazing!!!

even with it being added in an update, it could still be found out about but yeah, that would be cool for it to be hidden that well.
