posted06/09/2014 11:23 PM (UTC)bythisiscourageAnyone else hoping that mortal kombat X will challenge us to unlock playable characters. I did not like how in MK9 by the end of story mode you had unlocked almost every character. I want to see hidden characters.. I want to see a lot of question marks on the select screen. I want challenge modes to make me earn my character list!

I'd like to have unlockable characters, but if they're catering to the competitive crowd it won't happen.

This gimmick worked in the 1990's.
Today everyone's connected to the internet. We'll know all secrets in the game within the first 24 hours after its release.
I personally wouldn't mind seeing unlockables. However, today's gamers DESPISES to actually play a game to unlock stuff.
A good example is the app Tapped Out. I cannot tell you how many people I see on the Facebook group whining about how they have to wait such a long time to unlock certain costumes for the characters. They'd actually want to pay someone to do the dirty work. Seriously? Are you that impatient to get what you want? You really can't tap things for three weeks to get goodies?
Seriously, everyone is too freaking impatient that they want things immediately at the start. What's the fun in that?

Ive always thought its funner and more rewarding to work to achieve something Thats one of the reasons I really enjoyed MK as a kid.

I HATE unlocking characters. Mostly it's because I feel it's an unnecessary chore - usually forcing you to play some game mode that isn't fun or is primarily pointless ( Konquest...). Also as someone that is somewhat competitive I like having instant access to all characters so I can play around with them and get familiar with how they fight when I eventually play someone. Unlocking characters drags things out for literally no reason.
Unlockable costumes? Sure. Unlockable concept art and music? Great. Unlockable characters? Fuck no.

Some players may be just interested in online play and would rather be able to jump straight into practice/online and learn each character without having to worry about being forced to complete certain single player modes. Personally I hated how Deception forced you to play through the tedious konquest mode just to unlock half the cast.
I think a good compromise is having the game give you the one time option of unlocking characters when you first start up the game. Those who want to, can. Those who don't want to, don't have to.

I also don't like the idea of having unlockable characters. I bet that, if they chose to make Scorpion an unlockable character, many would start whining that they couldn't play him from the get-go.
I would rather make it so costumes, stages and even certain game modes are unlockable (bring Galaga back ).

I was thinking about this.. I doubt theyd ever implement it sadly
I don't like unlocking characters. Because when I get a game, I usually play it with a friend. And I don't want to spend hours, possibly days because I have other responsibilities and can't play all the time, to unlock the entire roster.
Give me all the characters from the get go, so I can jump into the versus mode right away.

I love unlockables. This was one of my favorite things about Deception.

That's a pretty reasonable solution. It pleases both parties. The people who wanna jump right in with their character and learn all the MUs can do so, and the people who like unlocking characters have the option to do so.

Agreed, along with characters from Deadly Alliance.
When I see the whole roster on my screen I feel underwhelmed in a short amount of time..
But starting of with 12 playable characters and there being 12 shadowed faces? Every time you unlock someone there is that feeling of getting to see a new character in action as well as knowing you have more characters to fill that character select screen.
I enjoy working for it.

For a new game I think it's fun for me to unlock certain characters like in MKDA & MK Deception. That whole earning your characters gave it good replay value coupled with the exploration of MKD was a lot of fun back in the day. Although I think when they release a komplete edition, then everyone should be in like they did for MK9KE and how Injustice UE should have been.

I agree. Having majority of the cast unlockable adds a ton to the replay value and it makes you appreciate all the characters once you have them. I'm not saying you still can't have a bunch unlocked at the beginning, but maybe if there's a cast of 30- 15 can be default and the other 15 can be unlocked via Arcade Ladder, Story Mode, The Krypt, and maybe even the challenge tower/

This. I always found it added a lot of longevity to the game trying to unlock all the characters.
That and I found I played with all the characters more because I always wanted to try them out after going through the effort of unlocking them.

As long as, while it's challenging, it's not Final Challenge Tower/Liu Kang in Deception hard, enough to challenge, even take a long time, but nothing TOO difficult.
Idea, Unlockable characters, but DLC to unlock everyone from the start via a few dollars, maybe 2 or 3 extra, for those who don't care, like WWE games now.
Gets NS a little more $$$ from those who are too lazy to unlock everyone, but lets others EARN the characters.
But ONLY characters, Costumes and other cool stuff you'd have to earn, regardless of Cash you have.

I prefer to unlock a lot of characters too, because you are forced to use the unlocked ones first, and discover some that you may not have intended to use straight away that actually suit you.
I was disappointed by MK9 having more DLC than in-game unlockables.
But after reading some of the posts here i understand a little more why having not too many characters to unlock is considered a good thing by some people, but i just don't agree with them, and think that more characters to unlock adds replay value like the other posters have said.

I haven't played Deception in years and last time I had to unlock the characters was way back in 2004, so how was Liu Kang unlocked? I remember when I unlocked him but forgot how exactly lol.
Anyway, I definitely agree. I don't want super extreme hard. Mario Kart Wii characters were so damn hard to unlock that six years after release I STILL haven't unlocked a certain character and I'm doubting I ever will.
Nothing THAT difficult.

If memory serves you unlocked Liu Kang by doing his training in Konquest which could only be done at the end...and then you had to find the chest in Edenia that unlocked him that only appeared at some specific time.
Basically without the internet or some kind of guide I doubt anybody would have ever unlocked him.

Liu Kang had to be unlocked by accessing a chest that was only visible on Friday at midnight in Edenia.
Crazy? Hell yeah it was.

I've always preferred obtaining characters by defeating them. Honestly, the Challenge Tower would be an awesome place to unlock characters. It could even be done in a story-like fashion, say, three to five challenges per character.
You go through all the challenges to progress through the "story," and on the final challenge you fight the character to unlock them. I'd love it.

Forget DLC and we get Konquest Mode to unlock our characters?
If not, a Konquest Mode or a Morgue to unlock all other stuff. Drop the Krypt this time.
