Is Sex in MK9 Taboo?
0
posted04/27/2011 04:35 PM (UTC)byJaxFatalityWhy is it okay to show peoples guts getting ripped out on internet video game forums, but you can't show a female breast?
I am always surprised when people say they are shocked by the sexual images I make of Kitana and Mileena together. Its just SEX! Are we MK fans more offended by sex than violence?
Do you think the MK9 story mode has the right amount of sexual suggestiveness (like Jade's up-skirt shot), or should it have more, or less?
Will this generation of teens become desensitized to sex in a similar way that teens in the 80s and 90s got used to violence?

I sent you a PM, but what is your opinion on the issue?
I think sex in games is taboo in general. I feel this is because parents still see all video games as something for little kids, not adults (because they, on the older, more whiny end of the spectrum themselves weren't in the generation to grow up with gaming) so they think any gore, violence or sex will corrupt the youth of the nation even if the game is rated M. Could you imagine the uproar if MK combined gore AND sex? there would be protests and calls to ban the game all over the place.
Now, I for one don't really mind because cartoon nudity doesn't do anything for me and I find it somewhat odd..so you might get a raised eyebrow if I happened into a thread with fan made Kitana Mileena action goin on. But to each is own and i understand and accept that there are people out there who dig that kinda thing.

MK is an American video game franchise.
Yanks love the Wild West, guns, FPSs, gangs, violence, WMDs, high school massacres...
Yanks however hate nudity and sex (*see Super Bowl 38 half-time show)... unless, of course, it's of the violent kind (*see any given modern American produced pornography).
Thus, you have MK2011.

It's not in Mortal Kombat that sex is taboo.
It's those Americans who think sex is taboo, amongst other nationalities.
In my opinion, it's rather sickening that people have no problem with slicing the guts out in videogames, but should someone show a boob, then "OH NO, MY FAMILY MUST NOT SEE THIS!!!" ...
Maybe it's just because I live in Denmark where we don't have these issues.

On many extents, yes...unfortunately.
First off, you have the people who would have a temper tantrum at the sight of sex simply because nudity is 'wrong' in the eyes of society.
Then you have the fact that MK has never been a series that really focused on romance or sex, and if they started now, fans would freak out because any form of character development is just wrong in their eyes.
And then you have the factor that sex in video games looks awkward 9 times out of 10.
Other than that...I'm for it. I still want my Flesh Pit costume for the entire cast.

Great responses!
Whether we like it or not, Americans still have pretty conservative attitudes towards sex as a result our religious and educational institutions.
This influence can be traced back to historical religious wars: There was no problem killing people if they believed it was divine will, but you never saw sexuality openly celebrated in Christianity, Islam, etc.

10/10.
Also, regardless of what one thinks about sex in video games, JaxFatality's sig is the creepiest goddamn thing ever. Way to take home the forum's "most likely to have a half-dead schoolgirl tied up in his van" award.

Sex in video games full stop is taboo.
I do believe the only game that has pulled it off maturely is Mass Effect. I could be wrong though.
I think with all the OTT violence Ed Boon and co really dont want to get in trouble about sex.
To be honest as far as video games are concerned it should be mostly off camera allowing you to write your perverted slash fics in peace.

Yeah, I'm going to leave this thread now.

The thing about sex in a video game, is usually it feels completely out of context and gratuitous.
For example... why on earth would sex acts be in an MK game? Why would sexual situations beyond Johnny's flirting or a romance or two be necessary to tell a good story?
Sex in and of itself isn't wrong, but throwing it in just 'cos you can doesn't make sense in a fighting game...
And on top of that, for some, they want to keep their sex stuff private etc. I know I don't particularly want to randomly have some random making out and lovemaking when really I bought the game to tear out spines...
In regards to your artwork, however, though I've only seen your sig, it may be a case of over-sexualization. You have to admit, that picture pretty much falls into the category of "erotica", fetishistic erotica at that. Some people don't want to see that on an internet forum or in a game, particularly with characters they may or may not have affection for. That doesn't necessarily make them prudes (though I'm sure some may well be).

The fact that violence in modern media is more acceptable than nudity is common throughout the world, not just in North America. However, I do think the difference between the two is smaller in for instance Europe.
Still, it's in my opinion a completely retarded concept. Sex is a beautiful thing and a naked female body is nature's best work of art.
Violence destroys.
I don't know where the acceptance of violence and the rejection of nudity came from, but I for one am in for a change.

Japanese games are full of sex and innuendo thereof... this, in spite of the country's pornography having to 'mosaic' the genitle regions of their actors by law for local releases!
Look up the developer 'Illusion' and read up on the Japanese animation industry, like hentai, and you'll soon see the aversion to sexuality in video gaming, and the like, is an American centric phenomenon. Europe sure don't have a problem with sex -- MK2011 is banned in Germany, but this would never have happened if the game was all T&A as opposed to blood and gore.
It's all a rich tapestry, sex / violence / entertainment / society; to go into detail is beyond the scope of a MK forum. But it all ties into the military-idustrial complex the US is built upon, the bellicose culture of the country and the underlying religious influences that underpin a lot of what shapes peoples' insular views in the country.
Ask yourself why games that amount to little more than 'kill trainers' (i.e., FPSs) are pushed so hard and given a pass in relation to the scrutiny of their violent nature, when they're the least innovative and cerebrally taxing genre in the industry today? It wouldn't have anything to do with the 5000+ sorties flown into the likes of Pakistan -- the undeclared 'wars' waged every day -- using drone aircraft that are mostly piloted by young guys with zero combat experience using Xbox 360 controllers, would it...?
Like Assange said; American soldiers of today are completely detatched from the wars they participate in and treat it like a video game; kill counts and all. This is a product of a society that inures its youth to violence through media like video games. A game diet full of erotica and titillation isn't going to get young Yan-Kees to abandon their partners to rush off to foreign lands to murder and mame for oil and fictitious WMDs.

The lack of sex in Mortal Kombat has nothing to do with American taboos and conventions. I can't believe that even came into the conversation.
Everyone knows sex and violence doesn't mix, and if you think it does, please wear aluminum foil so we all know who you are.

What the hell are you talking about?! Gtfo.
And, yes, sex does not belong in MK. Ever.

Agreed with this.
Mortal Kombat is a game about fighting people to a bloody pulp and finishing them off in the most brutal way ever...
Why do we need to drag what countries' fault it is or whatever, no... That bullshit doesn't need to even come into this conversation.
There's a lot more fucked up shit that's out there and Mortal Kombat isn the type of game that can really mix sex and violence together. You get Mileena and that's it.
