I may be in the minority here, but I feel that with each game and advancement in graphics, the costume design just gets worse. The thinking behind the designs seems to be 'Well, we have more polygons now... Let's make them ridiculously intricate!'

Sometimes, less is more. I think too many of the characters are starting to look less "Mortal Kombat" and more 'Generic Fantasy RPG' with all the jewel encrusted, ultra elaborate shizz they got going on. I miss the simplicity of the outfits from the first games. After "MK4", for me, it started to go downhill.

The female characters in particular, need an overhaul. I'm no prude; I have no issue with the girls looking sexy and showing some skin. But now, they look like hookers. *Trashy* hookers. I mean, Mileena's alternate costume from "Deception" was ridiculous. The barely there bandage get-up from "MK9", whilst equally ridiculous, is kind of excusable because it did (almost) make sense, in terms of the plot. But Sonya, hard as nails special forces chick, turns up to a martial arts tournament looking like she just stepped off stage after performing with the Pussycat Dolls? Come on, now.

Yes, the female costumes are getting worse I fear. Way too much skin exposed, unnecessary high heels, too much boob cleavage and so on...

MKSM & MKDA Kitana (blue masked costume), MKD Jade (both costumes), MKD Mileena (primary), MK4 & MKSM Sonya, MKA Sheeva (primary) were all superior to their MK2011 primary designs. The only one that improved imo is Sindel.

The male costumes are still pretty badass for the most part . Stryker, Ermac, Sektor, Cyrax, Noob Saibot etc. all really look great.

I can't wait for the day we see the first female character revealed for MK10 and what her costume is gonna look like. If that one fails, I expect all the others to be a failure as well.

I think the high heels are the biggest problem; well, that and Sonya's lack of undershirt! grin
And Sheeva's unitard:

EDIT: Dammit, I tried to post a picture of Borat's sexy lime-green unitard but apparently I screwed it up! tongue

I found the costume design in MKDA-MKA to be vastly superior to most in every other game.

definitely agree. the art style is too fantasy looking, prefer it to be dark and serious again. 2be honest does this also count for the music and atmosphere!!

the MK atmosphere is what i miss most

Yeah umm, i have seen military uniforms for girls and they look nothing like she does. The Sonya in the movies was better. They should Redesign her to look more like sonya in movies. And mileena, lets face it shes an ugly faced girl that kills you. Put her in some Bad-A Armor instead that doesnt show anything. Kitana is okay, just dont make it so revealing. Now i really like Scorpions Out fit. Leave that Alone for all eternity. Just get characters to look more Realistic without going to far.

The females are just sluts. Their costumes don't fit their role. It's just not believable anymore that Sonya is from the Special Forces with the way she dresses. That goes for the ninja bitches too. I don't care if sex sells. No one in their right mind can comfortably dress like those whores do.

This may not be COSTUME related, but I'm tired of every male character having practically the same body-build. Honestly, do ninjas really lift weights like Jax would? The character modeling needs to be more unique and give these fucking characters their own personality. Just modeling their faces differently is not enough.

I agree for the most part. The males in this game look nice, it's the girls that have the problem. There were some great designs in the artbook and most of them got scrapped. Especially for Kitana. I was hoping they would go for her MKSM assassin look but they went for the hair-dipped-in-glue look -.-'
And I seriously thought they were crazy to ditch this one for Mileena:

She looks like an assassin from Edenia, she looks evil, she looks sexy without being overly slutty (for MK's standards at least :P), she looks just awesome!
bottom line: they need new designers AT LEAST for the girls!

The only Outfit that fit sonya was her deadly alliance alternate outfit with the full military outfit. Now they should take that outfit, remove the hat, and just turn it black. or give her a suit to look more like a Black Ops uniform. For Mileena, Give a full bodysuit with armor similiar to rain. For Kitana, not sure,
and Jade Same thing. If they bring back frost, I guess they could give her a full uniform. And Sheeva, they should give her a female shokan armor plates, not a few strips of cloth. I was very disappointed when i learned of Mileenas Flesh Pit Costume. If they Bring in Li Mei, they better do a better job. and Tanya, make her look more like Kitanas or Jades outfits but with covering. Make an Edenian warrior look like an actual Edenian warrior, not like some half-dressed chick who looks like she walked out of the strip club. Armor, padding, covering, those are the elements of a warrior.

I agree, I can imagine sonya in a strip club saying " Oh crap, I'm late for mortal kombat!" I mean they should have a little skin, maybe like a small amount of stomach and maybe short sleeves or something like that. I can see the point of it all is to up the appeal of the game. But now it's getting a bit much. My one friend says he agrees and he says he could picture kitana doing a blow-jobality in his head.

I completely agree with "Sakura Droplet". The costumes need drastic work in my opinion. I personally would rather have the characters wear the more traditionalized marital arts costumes as a DEFAULT costume i.e. (gi, MK1 ninja palette swaps, hakamas, kimonos, kickboxing gear, MMA gear, millitary attire, punching gloves, karate belts and boxing trunks) and if people want alternate looks such as a more comtemporary look, the comtemporary costumes can be unlockable as another option in various gaming modes.

The female characters need the BIGGEST improvements. I can understand that Mileena's character dressing in a seductive manner being that she's supposed to be a seductive assassin, but Kitana and Jade both dressed as pole dancers when they're supposed to be of Edenian royalty? Sonya looks like she's a stripper for some guy's bachelor party especially with her alternate costume in a white wife beater and shorts. If she's really supposed to be of a special force opps., I guarantee she won't be dressing as she's presented in the video game unless she's undercover or something. I hope that if they introduce new female characters, that they present them as female martial artist and as female fighters instead of these palette swap variations of pole dancers, strippers and hookers. I think a good example of a depiction of female characters would be characters such as Ibuki, Asuka, Sakura, Xiayou, Jun Kazama, Cristie Montenario and Taki just to name a few.

Also it seems like just about every male character has a loincloth in their costume attire as well. Shao Kahn, Goro, Kintaro, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Rain, Reptile, Baraka, Shang Tsung, Kung Lao, Smoke, Raiden, Kabal and I could go on and on. So technically there's really not too much drastic variation in the costume looks.

That being said, the characters that I think have a proper look to their costumes would be Baraka, Kung Lao, Older Shang Tsung, MK1 Sub-Zero, MK1 Scorpion, MK1 Reptile, MK3 Kitana, MK3 Jade, MK3 Mileena, Stryker, Liu Kang if he lost those mud flaps on his hips, the cyborgs, MK1 Ermac, MK1 Noob Saibot,
MK1 Smoke, MK1 Rain, Kabal if he lost his metal backpack and MF Doom Mask/ Preator Mask, Jax, Kano if he had an undershirt to cover up his taco meat chest hair under his gi, and Quan Chi.

Again I think trying stay true to the traditional martial arts attire would be better, I mean you don't expect to walk inside a dojo and spar with the Sensei in a business suit or a motorcycle bike mask and helmet on would you? I think this would a fair depiction with an alternate of showcasing the characters in comtemporary clothing would be great as alternates would be good to present an alternate look.

I am not against the fact that the girls look like... Well many sluts will even dress more decently but in fighting? UFC, Boxing, Wrestling, they don't wear a lot and are confortable with their movments. Also, seeing characters fight with kiminos or have them dress like normal ppl/fighters would quickly become boring, annoying imo.

I do realize the fact that Crimson Viper from SF was still interesting both in terms of gameplay and looks even with her tuxedo on imo.

I know that it easily sells and that is why we'll see more and more of that in the future imo. And i love that.

We might all have opinions or ideas about how we could make the looks/models better but i haven't seen any proof that someone had a decent dressing or look for the MK females that would be better than what we are provided with so...

I said that a lot of times but: No one that complains about the way the females dress ever takes a minute to complain about the fact that Goro still walks around with only underwears. So i'll stick behind the MK females, love them the way they are. If i can't get confortable with a particular character's gameplay i won't waste my time trying so hard even if this char is a cool looking female but in complete honesty, i still get amazed by the girls look for a moment even if they're not all characters i will end up using.

Although I know sex sells in this age, the female characters in MK always look like strippers and pole dancers. They look corny imo. Even Sonya who supposed to be a no nonsense military disciplined woman, her costume does her a disservice to what her background is supposed to be like. I mean can you imagine lining up in formation with that alternate white wife beater outfit she has.

Kitana and Jade are supposed to be Edenian royalty. Edenia must be the land of the strippers and pole dancers for the way they look. Sindel looks like a dominatrix from the Adam's family. I just rather have females have a more traditional look to themselves so they can look more credible as fighters. A good example would be Ibuki from Street Fighter. She could be a loosely based model for the way the female ninja assassin character could look.

I just kind of dismiss they're legitamacy as a legit fighter when they pop up with all of they're body showing in some stilleto boots but yet throwing spinning heel kicks effortlessly. But yet again they're supposed to be some assassins or ninjas or royality or princess or guardian so the wear a mask to cover the lower part of they're face. Seems like a contradiction to me. Mileena's look would be the only one that's justified in my opinion.

Another example of a female character that would be good reference would be Asuka in Tekken in her more comtemporary look. She's presented with a somewhat comtemporary and provocative look that doesn't go overboard.

Well, i was not saying that the MK females don't look like strippers or that i would be against a different look or different way for them to dress. If the ideas or new designs are cool i would still like them. But i on the other end never knew what the Edenian royalty should look like instead of what we are provided with. The games are so violent but that doesn't matter to anyone. What if Liu Kang gets his ass kick so bad that he pisses blood and loses parts of his clothing/armor when fighting Shao Kahn? They are enemies after all and he deserves it. But Sonya, Kitana, Jade, Tanya, Nitara, Mileena? "Well they should censor such things as females being beaten and losing parts of clothing especially since they don't wear much." That arguing is low-life in my point of view. Well, Sheeva's not attractive at all in the eyes of many so what if she would fight naked?

I know about Asuka from Tekken and understand your point. Also the fact that Mileena is the most seductive and brutal assassin/female of the franchise. But most of the Tekken roster is made of contemporary ideas for fighters. Actual spies, kickboxers. MK's roster deals with mythologic monsters, abilities. Gods, demons, ninjas. Well Sonya is kind of weird, i agree. Her 2 MKDA outfits were more decent and better imo. They would make great pole dancers, i can't argue with that. My point is that those pole dancers are in a bloody, rated mature fighter. And they can kick a god's ass no matter how hard it would be when wearing high heels in reality. They are the only ones that can and would dare doing it. I think it's great since i have no idea of something each of them could wear that would make them more realistic and still interesting and different in terms of look. Like i said, i love them better than the Tekken roster for the fact that they look the way they look.

I do not drool over the ladies instead of learning how to play as them but i always notice them for their looks first. Still Goro and Kahn dress like WWE gigolos and i don't care. So, wearing high heels or kiss boots to fight in the MK universe when they're almost naked for the rest of their body is only a little weird. Mythologic monsters or Edenian fighters that would dress like you or me, or even like a simple karate fighter or MMA kickboxer wouldn't fit more their style and environment imo. Take example on MKA. Would a MK female or even male think about wearing MMA's fighter gloves or dressing more decently and realistic before going to battle? "Let's go kill them Kitana." "Oh, but wait Jade, i look like a real drug addicted prostitute like mom said." I think the environment is there for something but not justyfying it in any way though. I think the whole games don't make much sense but i still love them. So the way the girls dress makes them hard to be believable as fighters but the way the Bruce Lee of the franchise can throw fireballs and turn in a dragon is way more believable? Don't let Sonya dress like Britney Spears but have her and Kitana still able to dismember the enemy with a kiss? That is weirder than having a pole dancers or sluts beating each other to death but that violence and weird powers doesn't cross the line of bad taste? If there is nothing wrong with a female or male celebrity showing some skin in real life why is there something wrong when a character in a game does? Just asking.

You have some very valid points with your arguments with the violence and mythical elements of this game and contrasting that with reality. With that said though, my main argument with the look of the MK females, that it would seem that there's no creativity that goes into their costumes or variety.

Just about every female character with the exception of Sonya looks to have a stripper/pole dancer palette swap of each other, Mileena, Jade, Kitana, Sheeva and Skarlett. But then when it comes to the male ninja characters, they dedicate all types of resources to differeniate their characters apart. All most to the point of ruining the characters look.(Ex. MK3 Sub-Zero - looks like he's going to a nightclub with thick blocked suspenders and a loincloth.) I think it's bout time that MK with all the revamping of characters they did with MK9 that they put some more creative effort in showcasing their female characters.

Some ideas for Kitana could be that she could look similar to Anna from Tekken. A more traditionalized kimono dress like attire with a semi-conservative provocative look giving her a more sophiscated look of royality rather than the ranchiness of her look now. Jade can look like the character in Bankotsu from the Band of Seven in the Inuyasha Anime series. Sonya can wear a simple sports bra with kickboxing pants and a black belt doubly wrapped around her waist MMA punching and kicking pads on her limbs so this would give the women variety.

I think the point of MK with all the mythical aspects of it's characters and battlegrounds would be to balance that element of mythology with reality very similar to way the Harry Potter did in their series of movies. Another good example would be the like Iron Man or X-Men, Thor, the new Batman series of movies. They balanced the mythical elements of their characters with realistic circumstances and environments without making their all of their female characters looking all like pole dancers and strippers. I mean if the creative staff wants that type of look for some of the female characters it would be cool but it I think they should emphasize that in their character's backstory or do it in moderation with select characters such as Mileena like maybe X-Men did with Angel or Mystique. My point is that they go overboard with it to the point that it looks degrading to their female roster.

Her dressing as she does is part of her character, shes bat shit insane and shes over compensating for Tarakatan face.

My apologies Esoteric.

Thanks for giving me credit in my points but i guess i got too far with the whole censorship thing i kind of forgot that your main point was not about censoring for the fun of it but to better their look creatively and make them more believable.

I'm studying to become a writer and i'm dead set against any form of censorship. But that being said, i agree that there must be ways to make the MK ladies more like fighters. Their looks don't make much sense but that is probably what i like the most about the franchise. Probably like them better because they look so fucked up and don't make any sense in a fighting game for the most of them.

I wouldn't be against a radical change but maybe i would miss their pole dancers attires. I like your ideas though and agree with the fact that it seems the more games are released, the more they give the females that type of look. Some moderation in the amount of characters looking this way could do.
