Early in the history of Mortal Kombat, shortly after the defeat of Great Kung Lao, the Red Dragon's participant in that tournament, a warrior named Rank, returns to the clan's lair. He is called to meeting with the Red Dragon Grand Master; Daegon. When Rank shows up to the false meeting, he is greeted by Daegon, plus some Red Dragon assassins. Many of these hit men, Rank had trained himself. Daegon tells him what his punishment for losing the tournament will be; death. The order is given and the assassins close in on Rank. He defends himself for a while but eventually is knocked to the floor.
Rank decides to use a meditation technique he developed; a technique which allows him to slow his pulse to a stop, dieing temporarily to fool the Red Dragon assassins into thinking he has been finished. But the Technique requires that he lose consciousness for a few hours.
The ruse works, and Rank eventually wakes up to find himself at the bottom of a reservoir. Scarred and disfigured beyond recognition by the battle, he makes his way to the surface and emerges. Something about the waters that he was thrown into, infused his soul with dark powers and made his appearance as black as coal. Rank disowns his vow to the Red Dragon and swears eternal vengeance. he gets rid of his own identity, since the Red Dragon thinks he's dead. He adopts a new name that will instill fear in
the hearts of Red Dragon members; he calls himself The Black Dragon. The Black Dragon becomes a vigilante whose sole purpose is to reek havoc upon the Red Dragon.
In the months to come, Red Dragon member begin to mysteriously turn up dead or missing. Daegon sends many threatening letter signed, "The Black Dragon". So much so that the Grand Master is forced into hiding. The Black Dragon could not be stopped, no matter how hard Daegon tried to track him down. He did not know that the Black Dragon was actually a former Red Dragon, he believed Rank to be long dead.
Soon, the Black Dragon began recruiting member and forming a clan of his own. Those who sought to join the Black Dragon were usually warriors who had been affected negatively in some way by the Red Dragon Clan, and wanted revenge. The Black Dragon personally trained all his recruits several techniques (including the temporary death meditation) that would be passed down though the ages and become exclusive to The Black Dragon Clan.
Unfortunately, when the Black Dragon formed a clan, it made him a much more public figure, and therefore easier to track. Daegon sent his best assassins to track the Black Dragon down, kill him, and bring back his head. They accomplished this task; the Red Dragon Grandmaster was pleased. Though weakened by the loss of their Grandmaster, the Black Dragon Clan remained and carried on the goal of the fallen Black Dragon. A family of criminals soon took control of the Black Dragon Clan. The Red Dragon then began their campaign to wipe out remnants of the Black Dragon.
The rivalry between the two clans dragged on for centuries until the Black Dragon Clan's membership began to dwindle. It was at that point in history when the Black Dragon Grandmaster at the time, Morihei Uyeshiba began a Black Dragon sect in America.
The clan flourished in the western lands. From their new American members, the Black Dragon developed their now trademark techniques of Brute Force and gorilla kombat tactics. Soon, the Black Dragon Clan changed from former Red Dragon members seeking revenge to a group of unwanted criminals pulling bank heists. The Clan becomes such a burden that the U.S, Government established a Special Forces squad whose sole purpose was to hunt down and destroy anything even remotely related to the Black Dragon. The American Black Dragon Clan had become a legitimate criminal organization, while the Black Dragon Clan in Asia was still facing complete annihilation at the hands of the Red Dragon.
Soon, Daegon continued his pursuit of the Black Dragon by immigrating the Red Dragon to America. Now, with the Red Dragon and Special Forces squeezing them from both sides, the Black Dragon again was pushed to the point of near extinction. Years passed and membership slowly shrank until the Black Dragon was nothing more than a handful of resilient criminals.
To find a solution to their persecution, the Black Dragon looked back at their past; when the Asia Black Dragon faced extinction, they immigrated to America where the Clan flourished. And so the solution they came up with was to, again, immigrate the Black Dragon to another land. But not merely another country, they planned on bringing the Black Dragon to another Realm. Kabal had learned of a perfect reality, called Chaosrealm, which celebrated disorder and mayhem and welcomed all criminals.
The only thing the Black Dragon needed was a means of traversing the Realms. The Clan set their hopes on a hidden and well guarded diamond, called the Shitian. The Black Dragon sent out a task force of criminals to recover this diamond. They were able to keep the mission a secret from the Red Dragon; however someone tipped off the Special Forces about their quest for the Shitian. All the member of the task force was apprehended by Major Jackson Briggs, only to be set free by Kano.
Jax then hunted down and killed most all members of the task force, this included Tremor, Tasia and No Face. But the warrior, Jarek, was spared. What followed was a huge retaliation by the Black Dragon Clan. They launched a full assault on the special Force headquarters. Where Kano killed Sonya Blade's partner, among other Special Forces agents. From then on Sonya swore she would gain vengeance, not only against Kano but the entire Black Dragon Clan. The Black Dragon eventually retreated without finishing off the Special Forces.
The Black Dragon returned to their lair, all hopes of recovering the Shitian were lost; the Clan no longer had the man power to do it. Soon hope arose again when Kano heard that the next Mortal Kombat
Tournament was taking place. And the Grand Master of the Tournament possessed the power to transverse the Realm. Kano decided to to enter the tournament and fight alongside Shang Tsung, against Earthrealm, in the hopes that, if he won, Tsung might grant the Black Dragon passage to Chaosrealm. Sonya would follow him to that Tournament.
Kano soon became lost in Outworld following the Tournament; he would later serve under Shao Kahn, never returning to the Black Dragon. Kano became to caught up in the wars of Shao Kahn to be concerned with Clan matters anymore, in fact he believed the clan had completely died out. Jarek went into hiding and after Shinnok's invasion has never returned to the Black Dragon.
Kabal went into hiding, as well, and, following the Tournament, found his way to Outworld (when he is attacked and disfigured by some Tarkatan warriors, he uses the same meditation techniques Rank used Centuries earlier. Kabal would use this technique again to fake his death at the hands of Mavado). Kabal now transverses the Realms looking for warriors to recruit into the New Black Dragon Clan.

Official History for the Black Dragon Clan here at MKO. I used elements and characters from alot of non-kanon MK comics and games. Like the Shitian part at the end is based on Mortal Kombat: Special forces. And the character of the Black Dragon is from the Malibu Comics. enjoy.
