MORTAL KOMBAT: Liu Kang
By: Jaime Leal
The stench of mold grew as Liu Kang continued his descent into the Monastery. Pitch darkness blinded the hall, echoes of mice and rainwater dripping from the ceiling resounded throughout the area. Liu blinked his eyes as they tried to adjust to the darkness. The sound of lightning crashed around the Monastery, causing a vibration to run beneath Liu's feet. His body tensed in high alert as he moved into his fighting stance. Silence ticked as Liu waited, taking quick and quiet breaths, trying to conceal himself from what he thought may have been a fighter. Sighing, Liu moved out of his stance and began to walk.
A glint of silver haloed from the darkness. The color elongated as it began to approach close behind Liu. The sound of a foot splashing into water caused both Liu and the light to stop in their tracks. After a quick silence a beastly roar surrounded the area. Liu turned, his ears highly trained on the sound of running feet coming towards him. The silver color was pointing straight forward aiming at Liu's chest. Quickly, Liu ducked to the floor, his leg extended to his side. A boot met the extended leg. The silver color crashed into the floor.
Liu jumped to his feet and moved into his fighting stance. The silver color began to stand.
``What are you?'' Liu asked with force. His answer was met with a second silver color emerging a shoulder apart from the other. Both colors moved close to each other and began to slide against each other, blade upon blade. Teeth gnarled viciously as the silver blades charged towards Liu once again. Liu began to lightly jump on both feet, his body readying for the next attack. As the blades came closer, Liu could see the creature's eyes. They were a bright yellow with narrow, long black slits for its pupils. A Tarkatan. It wasn't just any Tarkatan, it was Baraka. Baraka growled as he jumped into the air. Both of his blades were pulled forward, flying towards Liu. Liu fell to his back, the blades barely missing him. Liu threw his leg upwards, his foot connecting with Baraka's chest. Using Baraka's momentum, Liu rolled backwards, hurtling Baraka across the floor.
Liu came to his feet, his arms in front of him, ready to fight.
``What do you want Tarkatan!'' Liu exclaimed into the darkness.
``Impudent mortal,'' Baraka snarled, ``You will die!''
Baraka rolled onto his feet. His blades slid against each other but this time in Liu's direction. A bright spark flew from the blades and rushed towards Liu. Liu flipped towards the side, the sound of the spark whistling closely past his ear. Liu's feet touched the floor only to be carried up again. Baraka had lifted Liu off the floor and rushed him into a wall. Liu's back collided against bricks that came apart instantly. Liu was thrown to the floor dusty arena.
A gold symbol of a dragon was emblazoned into the ground. They were in a Mortal Kombat ring. Baraka gnarled as he flipped into the arena. He swung at Liu with his blades, his arms crisscrossing over each other. Liu ducked from the attack. Baraka spun in a circle. Liu took his chance. Standing from his duck, Liu snapped forward a leg towards Baraka's back. Liu's foot collided in the center of Baraka's spine. A loud cry rang from Baraka as he stumbled forward to the floor. Liu rushed forward and jumped onto Baraka. Liu's hands immediately reached for Baraka's neck. Liu's fingers tightened around the hard encrusted flesh.
``Who sent you?'' Liu questioned, his fingers continuing to tighten. Baraka glared at Liu, his mouth pressed tightly against each other.
``Who sent you?'' Liu commanded in a menacing tone, his fingers digging into Baraka's skin. Baraka growled and, with a quick arch of his waist, sent Liu tumbling over him. Baraka was on his feet, rushing towards Liu. Liu sprang to his feet and spun. Baraka's stomach pressed against Liu's extended foot. Air fled from Baraka's lungs as he flew backwards to the center of the emblazoned dragon. Liu approached Baraka's body as it convulsed on the ground. With a look of disgust, Liu raised his leg high and brought it down on Baraka's neck. His heel pressed into Baraka's throat. A pool of blood began to surround the corpse as Baraka's head flew into the air. Liu raised his palm at the head began to fall. An orange glow began to emerge from Liu's hand. A ball of fire shot out from his palm and incinerated the falling head. Ashes drifted to the ground.
``Fatality,'' Liu said as he looked at the headless corpse of Baraka.
