Artist's Remarks: | |
This is a portrait of Liu Kang from Mortal Kombat. I'm a huge fan of the games so this was a lot of fun to paint; I plan on doing a bunch of paintings based on the main characters as well. This painting is also a tribute to Bruce Lee, who I find very inspirational and whom the 'Liu Kang' character is based on as well. For reference I looked at some pics of Bruce Lee and the actor from the first film, as well as some photos of hands to help make this as realistic as possible. Overall I'm very satisfied

GhostDragon "Tis true my form is something odd, But blaming me is blaming God. Could I create myself anew, I would not fail in pleasing you. If I could reach from pole to pole, Or grasp the ocean with a span, I would be measured by the soul, The mind's the standard of the man."

This is fantastic. I really like the portraits that you've done so far. With this one--your Mileena artwork too--the eyes really convey the essence of the character, I think.
The 'only' thing I notice is that the separation of his pinky fingers aren't detailed enough. They seem a bit fused to his ring fingers making them look shorter than they should be. I don't think it's a matter of the drawing being bad, just more detail needing to be added for depth of separation.
Please do work on more characters, cause they're really cool to see. Actually, it's funny... I saw your gallery on cghub early last week and was wondering when you'd post something new here.

GhostDragon: Thank you! I'm glad to hear the eyes stick out, they're by far the most fun element to draw and paint for me, so I'm glad it shows. Good point about the fingers, I guess I softened the transitions a bit too much which worked against the form, I'll definitely be more conscious of that in the future. I'm actually finishing up Sonya Blade right now as well, can't wait to show it!
redman: Thanks and will do!
Nephrite: Thank you! I used Robin Shou and Bruce Lee for reference so that was intentional :)

This is so beautiful!!
It looks wet, and trippy, like one of those old 3d posters. The scar detailing is nice, and not overused. His skin looks like he's sweating, and his hair detail looks like he's underwater.

Oh. My. God! It's beautiful! Gorgeous! More sacred than life itself! Okay, maybe I shouldn't go that far, buy man oh man, this is an awesome piece! I haven't seen a Mortal Kombat painting this detailed and realistic for a long time. And it's of my man Liu Kang, too! Great job, and 5 points well-earned.
