Colourjob tutorial.
Artist's Remarks: | |
Here's another colourjob I did on one of JAX007's sketches. It's not my best colorjob (by far), but I found a nice set of steps on one of my back-up CD's, so I can use it to give you some insight in a simple colourjob process. I will post the original drawing by JAX007, and the various steps together with some textual explanation soon. -Acj

It's kind of hard to do a colourjob without a sketch, so we start of with the sketch.
Like I mentioned before, the sketching is done by JAX007:
I printed this picture on A4 size, and did the inking (with Rotring fine-liners, I think):
I then added shades with ebony pencils:
Still working on the same sheet of paper, I added the base colour layer with coloured pencils:
And with the same set of coloured pencils, I added multiple layers of colour to bring a realistic "dept" to it:
At this point I'm done with the analogue part, and start the digital "finishing touches".
So I scanned in the sheet, and added some contrast, smudged everything with a soft smudge brush to get rid of the texture of the paper and the pencils, and re-touched some minor details:
Last, but not least, I added the black background, and the glowing effect. I could put a small version of it here, but it's probably better to see it in detail in the initial post.
Well, that's about it.
Again, it's not my best colourjob ever (nor my best tutorial, heh), but it might give some insight in how one could approach such a thing.
Greetings,

that's pretty nice. What program are you using.

Although, I sure wish that Jax007 could of drew a fire effect on Scorpion's skull, I would of been better...anyways...Good job whit the GFX thing you used Acj, it rocks

Well, like the "tutorial" says, I did most of the work analogue (by hand). The smudging and glowing effect were done with Adobe PhotoShop 6 (I use 7 nowdays though).

Note that this drawing was done a good deal of time before Deadly Alliance came out. We'de never seen Scorpion with a flaming skull at that time.
While I was working on this tutorial yesterday, I was thinking of re-doing this picture, and adding flames to his skull.
I might actually do that when I have the time (and feel like it).

Thanks, and I might just do that.

Very nice, and informative. I like it ^_^. I especially love that yellow. That's my favorite shade of yellow.
Zentile Wrote: Scorpion's left hand...I think u made it into skin when it's suppose to be a glove. Well, it looks like skin anyway. I think the skull looks too 'merged' with the neck. It's cool, though. Nice work. |
It's leather. It's a lot browner and slightly darker than his skin.

I knew it was leather, but I think that you should make it a much darker brown, almost like mud.
And I would like to see a lot of detail in the skull. I mean, every little bump, It looks too smooth right now.
Example; On his teeth, make them look like real teeth, and put some bumps above them, going up to his nose.
Just check out some real skulls, and try working with that.
It's looking bad a$$ so far though.

Ah! The 'smudge whore' cg method! I love that technique- makes full-blown sketches seem like paintings. Can even do it well in PSP 8)
Anywho, its very nice to see the coloring development in process. I must commend ya for taking to the hand-medium route in color (and giving me a cool new term to use- 'analog'- I like that 8) ). What pen(s) did ya use for the inking?
I assume ya used Prisms for the colored pencils. Judging by the full cg- your seem quite the monster with colored pencils. I luv how ya blended the various hues- oranges and yellows, blues and greys, ect.. to give it a more painted look to the piccy.
Small problems: as Zentile wrote, tis hard to make out the line that separates Scorp's skull from his body suit. And it seems ya forgot to smudge the few highlights on near the top of his left leg 8)
That's all I can really quip about with the coloring- its just too good.
Yep, quite the analog asethete you are, AcjB. Beautiful coloring job, and informative at the same time.
The sketch is in a league of its own too. I probably mentioned it before, but Jax007's style is damn sweet. Love tha hatched shading and musculature. Only thing that looks out of portion are Scorp's MAMMOTH CALVES 8)
Once again, Jax007 and Acjb for tha team of pure ownage! Be still my jaw..

Thanks for the comments and critiques, guys. Pretty much all these things I did however notice myself, that's the reason I've been thinking of doing it again. JAX007's sketch does deserve more than an half-assed colourjob.
Hmm... I think I'm going to start on it today.
TLag: For the inking I most likely used Rotring fine-liners, and the coloured pencils were Bruynzeel's... I think.
