Marvel have brought their film universe to television with Agents of SHIELD. Mid last year, we found out they'll be following it up with four series original to Netflix that will converge as The Defenders. It's high time we got a thread! [We're getting superhero heavy around here, so for the love of god, be sure to start other threads if you have an interest, as well as contributing to this one.]
Led by a series focused on “Daredevil,” followed by “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage,” the epic will unfold over multiple years of original programming, taking Netflix members deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a culminating Marvel’s “The Defenders” mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.

Some of the stories reported so far:
- DAREDEVIL, DEFENDERS Headed to TV in Disney, Marvel-Netflix Deal UPDATED [November 7, 2013]
The companies will team on four thirteen-episode series, plus one mini-series. The four series are Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, culminating in an Avengers-style team-up mini-series called The Defenders.
The series will take place in New York's Hell's Kitchen, long the home of Daredevil and other "street-level" characters that the press release cals "flawed heroes." It also notes that the deal is for a "minimum" (emphasis ours) of four series and a mini-series, leaving the door open for more if any/all of them take off.
Marvel Television and ABC Television Studios are producing the shows.
"This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel's brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty," said Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment in the press release. "This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what's sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure."
- Marvel And Netflix Announce ‘Daredevil,’ ‘Luke Cage,’ and Three More TV Series [November 11, 2013]
In a move that pretty much changed the TV landscape in one fell swoop, Marvel and Netflix announced plans for a TV/on-demand version of “The Avengers” Thursday (November 7): four live action series based on their superhero properties will play on Netflix, all culminating in a team-up mini-series titled “The Defenders.”
- Drew Goddard Confirmed as ‘Daredevil’ Series Showrunner [May 11, 2014]
Days after Marvel announced their game-changing deal to put forth an interconnected universe on Netflix with four new 13 episode series’ and a Defenders mini-series, rumors targeted Drew Goddard as a strong candidate to pen the pilot episode of the Daredevil series. There is now confirmation that the Cabin in the Woods director and co-writer will have a greater role when The Man Without Fear makes his smaller screen debut.
- Drew Goddard Leaves Daredevil Netflix Series [May 27, 2014]
Is something up at Marvel? First news came out that Edgar Wright was leaving Ant-Man after being attached to the project for years. And now Drew Goddard has stepped down as showrunner for Marvel's Daredevil Netflix series. A Daredevil superfan, Goddard will still act as a consultant, but will focus primarily on his gig directing Sony's Spider-Man spinoff Sinister Six. Steve S. DeKnight, who created and showran Spartacus and worked with Joss Whedon on Buffy and Angel, will takeover Daredevil. So, look out for a scene where like a super big group of people all say, "I'm Daredevil."
- Netflix Finds Its Marvel 'Daredevil' Star [May 27, 2014]
Marvel and Netflix's Daredevil has found its leading man: Boardwalk Empire alum Charlie Cox.
Sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter that Cox will star as Matt Murdock, the blind lawyer by day and crime-fighting hero by night in the 13-episode drama.

I'm most excited for Luke Cage. I feel like he's pretty underrated. And Charlie Cox was great in Boardwalk Empire. I hope he fits well for Daredevil.

This month's news has really dropped my expectations. I've gone from hoping for gritty prestige series, to something more much Legacy in its quality. Keeping a 'wait and see' outlook, but Charlie Cox & Spartacus show runner do not thrill.
- Charlie Cox Is Marvel’s Daredevil, And Here’s Why You Should Care
MTV seem to like it. Not sure their reasons are entirely convincing. Michael C. Hall didn't trike me as a particularly good fit, but neither does Cox. Maybe I need to refresh my references, but he just looks like a Brit wafer, to me. Not Daredevil. Says very different things to what I'd like to hear, but will have to wait to be surprised.

- Clark Gregg Wants a Role in Marvel’s Netflix Series
In a recent interview with Movie Pilot, the star of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. revealed his desire to appear in one of the upcoming live-action series announced in November as part of unprecedented 60-episode deal between Marvel and Netflix.
“I’d be really disappointed if I don’t get to show up in New York for Daredevil, or Iron Fist was a huge favorite of mine in comic books as a kid,” Gregg told the website. “I’ve had more than my share so I shouldn’t be greedy but it would be a huge geekout moment for me if I got to meet Daniel Rand.”
If I really had to choose, I'd probably rather SHIELD keep their noses out of the mean streets. Just like the comics, this corner can be a compelling world where the rules are just a little bit different. Harder.

- Vincent D’Onofrio is Kingpin in Daredevil TV show
Marvel’s Daredevil TV show has found its Kingpin, with Vincent D’Onofrio signing on to play the classic villain in the forthcoming Netflix project.
According to Marvel’s official blurb, D’Onofrio will play the character as, “a powerful businessman whose interests in the future of Hell’s Kitchen will bring him into conflict with the blind attorney Matt Murdock and his alter ego Daredevil.”
It sounds as though Kingpin will be the primary antagonist of the series’ 13-episode run, although we’d expect to see a host of other villains popping up along the way.
Very interesting!

- Rosario Dawson Joins "Daredevil" Cast
Rosario Dawson has joined the cast of Netflix's "Daredevil" series, as announced Friday on Marvel.com. Dawson's exact role on the series was not specified, but described as "a dedicated young woman whose quest to heal the wounds of Hell’s Kitchen brings Matt Murdock unexpectedly crashing into her life, while her own journey forever alters the course of his battle against the injustices of this broken city."
"Rosario Dawson is one the most charismatic, talented and powerful actresses in Hollywood, so she was always at the top of our list for 'Marvel's Daredevil,'" Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television, said in a statement. "Her role in the series is absolutely critical to Matt Murdock's journey to become the hero we know as Daredevil."
Certainly shaping up to be an interesting cast.

- FANTASY DRAFT: Who is Rosario Dawson Playing on "Daredevil?"
Welcome to the Marvel Universe, Rosario Dawson! So far, Marvel's "Daredevil" Netflix series is boasting quite the all-star cast. With Charlie Cox cast as Matt Murdock (which is very exciting news for fans of "Boardwalk Empire") and Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk (which is very exciting news for everyone), the live action Hell's Kitchen of "Daredevil" lore is attracting some grade-A thespians. With Rosario Dawson on board, Marvel has found a genre darling who makes this future event even more exciting. Dawson is fondly remembered as Gail, the Uzi-wielding leader of the Girls of Old Town in "Sin City"; she was Becky, the Mooby's manager with a billion-dollar smile and a heart of gold, in "Clerks 2"; and now, she's set make her Marvel Universe debut.
Nice speculation piece.

- EXCLUSIVE: Set Photos and Video from 'Marvel’s Daredevil'
Filming has been underway here in New York City for Marvel's 13-episode Netflix series, Daredevil and thanks to a loyal Latino-Review reader ‘GeniusMovieMind’ we were able to obtain some 'exclusive photos' and a short video from the production set.
According to ‘GeniusMovieMind’ the PA and Grips were telling people that the filming was for a show called "Bluff" and it took place on 115th and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd (or 7th Ave) but the signs were changed so it can read 43rd and 9th Ave.
The video shows a young Matt Murdock screaming “I can’t see” and the photo shows the toxic waste truck and handful of extras.

- 'True Blood' Star to Romance Daredevil for Netflix
Marvel and Netflix's Daredevil has cast its leading lady: True Blood breakout Deborah Ann Woll.
Sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter that Woll will play Karen Page, the blind lawyer by day and crime-fighting hero by night and Matt Murdock's (Boardwalk Empire's Charlie Cox) love interest in the 13-episode drama.
Page is the longest-running love interest for Daredevil. The character was created by Stan Lee and first appeared in the very first issue of Daredevil in April 1964. She's the secretary at the law firm of Nelson & Murdock who eventually learns of his secret life as a superhero. In the 2003 Ben Affleck feature film, Grey's Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo played the role, which was a minor character. The Netflix series marks the first time the Karen character will be brought to life in a meaningful way, sources tell THR.

Y'know, I'm kinda happy it so far sounds like Elektra won't even be appearing in the Daredevil show. Or if she does, at least she's not the "main love interest" this time.
Maybe Jennifer Garner's mannish lookin', obviously-not-Greek face and cardboard acting in the Affleck movie just soured me on the character, but so many damn Daredevil stories revolve around her and she's not even that interesting so it's nice to see something different.

If you're doing serial, it probably makes more sense to build to Elektra, any way. Still not quite sure what to expect from it all, though. Filling out the cast the way they are gets my head away from cheaper, flimsier, step-above-webseries thinking, though. Which is always nice.

With the close of the New York Comic Con presentation, Marvel has released the first official photos of Charlie Cox from the upcoming Netflix drama "Daredevil."
The first photo reveals the "Boardwalk Empire" alum in full costume -- called by Marvel his "first costume" -- which the company notes was inspired by the version seen in "Daredevil: The Man Without Fear," by Frank Miller and John Romita Jr. The other image depicts the actor as Matt Murdock.
Arriving next year on Netflix, the 13-episode drama also stars Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Vincent D'Onofrio as Kingpin and Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, joined by new additions Ayelet Zurer ("Man of Steel") as art dealer Vanessa Marianna (the future Vanessa Fisk), Vondie Curtis Hall ("ER") as investigative journalist Ben Urich, Toby Leonard Moore ("The Pacific") as Wilson Fisk's right-hand man Wesley, and Bob Gunton ("Argo") as Leland Owlsley (better known to Marvel readers as the Owl).

- NYCC: Rosario Dawson's "Daredevil" Role Revealed
Ending months of speculation, Marvel revealed this afternoon at New York Comic Con that Rosario Dawson won't be playing White Tiger, Echo or Typhoid Mary in the Netflix drama "Daredevil," but rather Claire Temple, a "nurse who works at night." The actress was unable to attend the convention panel.
In Marvel Comics lore, Claire is a nurse -- and later a doctor -- and the ex-wife of Bill Foster, aka Goliath. She's also a one-time love interest of Luke Cage, which may suggest a link to the Hero for Hire's own Netflix series.

- Krysten Ritter Cast as Marvel's Jessica Jones, Mike Colter Rumored as Luke Cage
The Hollywood Reporter states that Marvel Television has cast "Don't Trust the B--- in Apartment 23" alum Krysten Ritter in the leading role of its "Jessica Jones" television series collaboration with Netflix. Both Marvel and Netflix declined comment on THR's report.
According to THR, Ritter will play Julia (better known as Jessica Jones), the "cynical, sardonic and tough as nails, but innately cool and sexy title character." Ritter was first reported as a frontrunner for the role in November, alongside Alexandra Daddario, Teresa Palmer and Jessica De Gouw.
I like Krysten Ritter a lot, and the paper description of the character seems to fit. Just not what I would've ever imagined of Jessica Jones. Fair enough.
