I don't think we've been told for sure what he is. He's too big to be human, as well as having those spiky head things (which are official, since Tobias's did the MK2 comic). Originally, he and everyone else in Outworld were going to be mutants, and old concept art shows Kahn with the Baraka teeth.

Not everyone from Outworld is a mutant, as proven by characters like Kitana. And Shao Kahn is not originally from Outworld, he conquered it, when it was Edenia by beating their fighters in Mortal Kombat.

No! Outworld and Edenia aren't the same realm. Kahn has conquered many realms to merge with Outworld before he even came across Edenia. And besides the Edenians Outworld inhabitants are made up of all kinds of races loyal to the Dark Emperor. No one really know what Shao Kahn is.

I think that Bo Rai Cho and Li mei are from outworld as well, but I'm unsure

Here are the known realms in MK.

I think something is said about Shao Kahn being a demi-god. So is Kuatan where Goro is from? So how were they freed from Shao Kahn? Edenia was freed during Kahn's attack on Earth, why was Kautan Freed and not the Vampire realm?

He could be a Giant, like from old mythology.
He could be a Demi-God, maybe a Guardian like Raiden.
He could be a shape-shifter like Shang, taking whatever form he pleases.
He could be from an unknown race.
Hell, he really could be Shinnoks Son for all we know.

Kahn is the biggest mystery in the MK universe. That's why I think he should get his own Mythologies game.

Its never really discussed much, but I have to say a Mythologies game for Kahn would kick but. Imagine going through his whole history, starting as just some dude with a dream to conquer and destroy, and actually play as him as he gains strength, grows his armies and starts to take over realms? It could be a truely epic video game where you get to play a real bad guy for a change.

That would be awesome. That game could contain many elements from different types of games.

The base of the gameplay should definitely be action to keep the game fun and bloody but with some RPG elements which would work great with him growing stronger and his armies as well.

If a game like that would be made and done right, I think it could be one hell of a game.
