This is an ok topic since you aren't asking for the rom. Anyways, most MAME versions can run this baby.

Not actually.

Last time I tried it in early 2003 I ran UMK3 without MK3.

kunglao is right. Ive treid this a month ago, and MK3 needs to be there for UMK3 to work. anyway, not asking for a rom, but did they ever get the MK4 arcade game up and running for mame?

I swear in early 2003 I only got the UMK3 rom, and got everything working fine.

Whoops, turned out I also downloaded MK3 without knowing, my bad. BTW the best Mame bet would be this:

You don't have to use DOS, this is the simpler one of the Mame versions.

Oh and BTW, to hear MK2 and the MK3s properly, you need to turn your speaker up Maximum.

Not really. Press F2 to get into the game's menu and it's got a volume control option you can set.
And no, MK4 isn't supported. They haven't even gotten past reverse engineering the hardware. They say the Zeus hardware is one of the hardest hardware ever attempted to be emulated.

I have noticed that on different versions of mame, the MK games run at different speeds.
For example If I play UMK3 on Mame32-062, it runs fine, but if I play it on Mame32v78b it runs super slow.
And yes, I know how to adjust the frame rate.

I have found some big differences in performance between the .6x and .7x versions of Mame for the MK Games in particular. Someone mentioned changes made to drivers that the MKs (along with some other games) use so that might account for it, but I am unsure.

The reason is because up until around .63 I belive, they included hacks for the DCS sound system, which MK II, MK3, and UMK3 use (there was also hacks for the sound system of MK1). These sound systems on the actual hardware run at 53 Hz, which PC monitors don't generally support. So the hacks were included to force the DCS to run emulated at 60 Hz to match monitors. This made the games run smoothly.
However, the purpose of MAME is to accurately emulate the performance of arcade hardware. Since hacking the DCS goes against this goal by making a game run on a PC out of frequency of what the original hardware runs at, the hacks were forced to be taken out. This makes MK games run like they do on 60 Hz since the sound system jumps constantly to comptensate for the monitor running faster than the sound. Unless you have a very fast PC to handle this, it's what you'll get.

The sound distortion I get in MK games is present in all Mame games, regardless of the version of Mame. Even the simplest games have sound garbling here and there. My computer is quite fast (P4 3.2 gHz), and it does not compensate for this. The speed issues of game performance are entirely related to CPU speed, the sound is not. I use to think this was the case until I got my new comp, and the sound issue didn't go away. Wouldn't hacking the sound of a game in order to make it sound right just be a method of "accurate" emulation? I could understand the problem of the 53hz, but what about other games? The sound problem is identical.

Hacking the game doesn't make it more accurate. If the hardware runs at 53 Hz, then accurate means making the game run at the same frequency.
A P4 3.2 GHz is much more than enough to run MK games fully, but the fact is that you're still running a 53 Hz game on a 60 Hz monitor, so it still has to jump like it does to sync itself. I'm assuming your problem is just sporatic static and occasional double-sounds, like an uppercut connecting sound occuring twice, but full speed, whereas slower PC's just have the repeating sound and music all the time, along with super-slow speed altogether. When the hacks were in place, even PC's that ran MK games at full speed with sound had the static an occasional double sound effects, just to sync the sound with the monitor.

I can run UMK3 at full speed, but every now and then I'll get the crackling/double sounds, etc. But if I play Street Fighter Alpha 3 or Ninja Turtles or pretty much any 2-D game (except for Killer Instinct and other CHD games), I get flawless performance all around. Except for a few occasions where I screw up a setting somewhere, the double sounds are unique to the DCS games.
MK2KungBroken, it sounds like your computer specs crush mine, so I'm surprised you're having that problem with ALL games!

The double sounds I believe are the result of the 53.2hz vs the computer's 60hz, but not the crackling/static, that is just something that happens in all Mame games. For example, all CPS2 games have a tinny sound to them, and have the crackling/static on Mame, but sound on Final Burn is 100% perfect. They run at 59.6, which is closer to 60 obviously, does Final Burn hack the emulation as well to make the games run better?
There was an option in Mame for sound buffer in ms, I tried fiddling with that to see if it would help, it didn't.
