List of deaths in the MK world.
I'm bored, so I felt I'd list all the MK deaths and which ones have come back and which haven't... well shall I...? Let me know if I miss any.

Scorpion: Decapitated by Sub-Zero, but now exists as a specter.
Sareena: Apparently killed by Shinnok, later revealed to have survived.
Sub-Zero (1): Killed by Scorpion, reborn as Noob Saibot.
Mileenia: Killed by Kitana, sent to the Netherealm, where Shinnok allows her to come back.
Kintaro: Killed, presumed to have been done by Raiden
Johnny Cage: Killed by extermination squads, then revived by Raiden. (This was later retconned)
Kano: Thrown off a building by Sonya, but was saved by Motaro.
Motaro: Killed by Sheeva.
Sheeva: Killed by Shao Kahn.
Kung Lao: Thought killed by Shao Kahn, actually survived.
Shinnok: Presumed killed at the end of MK4/MKG by either Liu Kang or Raiden or both.
Jarek: Fell off a cliff.
Goro: Killed by Noob Saibot. Possibly did not die.
Shao Kahn: Killed by Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. Possibly revived or did not die.
Liu Kang: Killed by Shang Tsung, though soul was released, if his ending is canon then he is alive again.
Kano: Killed by Mavado. (Or so we think)
Hsu Hao: Killed by Jax.
Mavado: Killed by Kabal.
Johnny Cage: Killed by Tarkatan hordes. (Revived by Onaga.)
Jax: Killed by Tarkatan hordes. (Ditto)
Sonya: Killed by Tarkatan hordes. (Ditto)
Kitana: Killed by Quan Chi. (Ditto)
Kung Lao: Killed by Shang Tsung. (Ditto)
Raiden: Blew himself up, but energies reformed.
Quan Chi: Presumed killed by Raiden's blast, but may have escaped.
Shang Tsung: Killed by Raiden's blast, this is a definate.

That's all I got. Any I missed?

Kintaro's death has never been confirmed. The bio where he was blown up by Raiden during MK2 was actually written by Threshold (the people behind the movies) not Midway. I think it's best to count Kintaro as Missing In Action, and since Boon hates him, we've probably heard the last of him. If MKSM gives us any new info on Kintaro, I'd be interested to see it.

I'd also count Rain as being dead. His own MKT ending states that he was killed in a "failed suicide mission" against Kahn. Nothing happened to ever contradict this, and nothing has been heard from Rain in the time since, so I think Kahn killed Rain after he turned against the Emperor. Again, because nothing has happened to contradict it, I think Kano is dead, for now at least.

Aside from Kintaro, the others who's fates remain a total mystery (out of the canon characters) are Stryker, Kai and Reiko. We know Kai's MK4/MKG ending didn't happen, but we've no idea what did happen with him instead. No word either way on whether Stryker survived the Earth invasion, and I think Reiko's simply been written out to avoid any more of the bullshit controversy/arguments.

Although I really like Stryker and Kai, none of these guys are very important or popular (even Midway hate Reiko), so we might never know if they survived and if so where they are now.

According to Konquest in MKD Kintaro is still alive, probably demoted after MK II. Shaolin Monks shows a different fate for him. Then there's that bio that claims he was killed by Raiden that never appears in a game. 3 different sources, none that can really be trusted. I agree that Kintaro should just be considered MIA or status unknown.

I don't think Kano should be considered dead. I don't remember MKD ever saying anything about him. He is just ignored. Time and time again we've seen no appearance doesn't mean death. He could just come back as if nothing had happened in the next game.

My reason for counting Kano dead (at least for now) is that there is nothing to contradict Mavado's MKDA ending happening, where Kano is killed. Plus, Kabal has rebuilt the new Black Dragon from scratch, which suggests Kano must be out of the picture. We'll probably see him again in the future (remember how Jarek was meant to be "The last living Black Dragon member" back in MK4/MKG) but until he does, he should be on the death list imo.

Here's how I think the events leading up to Kano's death went. We know from MKD that Mavado succeeded his mission in taking out Kenshi for the Deadly Alliance. So for his promised payment, he gets the fight arranged with Kano, and again he wins this. Killing Kano and destroying the old Black Dragon. After this, Mavado himself is killed by Kabal, who survived his earlier attack.

Kano has been in Outworld for years, far away from the black dragon. so even if he's alive kabal would still be able to reform the clan without him. I doubt kano has been an active member for a long time.

all we can really say for kano is that he is MIA, but it seems that mavado may have killed him, MAY HAVE.

some design concept artwork said he wasnt gonna be "included" which probably means kanos had his time, and now hes probably gonna be put with characters like kai, stryker, reiko etc.

u also forgot to include reptile, he is semi-dead.
I'm willing to be Kano will be back next game. He has a habit of appearing in every other game.

Cage's "deaths and resurrections" in MK3 and MK4 were retconned in MKDA. Hell, his original "death" at the hands of Kintaro from MK2 was retconned by his MKT bio (believe me; I have the copy of Tips & Tricks magazine from sometime during the summer of 1996 stashed away somewhere, and in that mag, a fan asked the mag what happened to Johnny Cage, and the editors asked the folks at Midway, themselves, who confirmed Cage dead at the hands of Kintaro in MK2. That was his original death.)

Anyway, I think I'm gonna try and list all the deaths in chronological order here.

  • The One Being - Defeated by the Elder Gods, but his subconsiousness still lives on, waiting to be resurrected, and has used Onaga and Shao Kahn as pawns to bring this about.
  • Lucifer - Slain by Shinnok and Quan Chi during their war against him in the Netherrealm.
  • Onaga - Poisoned by Shao Kahn, though like the One Being, his own subconsiousness still lives on, waiting for his resurrection. Eventually, he would be reborn, though his soul takes possession of Reptile's body and transforms it into the shape of his original body to do so.
  • Drahmin - He was an Outworld warlord in his former life, so it's safe to say he was killed in battle. As we all know, his soul descended into the pits of the Netherrealm, and eventually became an Oni
  • General of Edenia's armies (name unknown) - Slain by Shao Kahn. He just happens to be Rain's father.
  • King Jerrod - Slain by Shao Kahn, and his realm was merged with Outworld, and his widow was stolen from him, as was their daughter.
  • Queen Sindel - Made a widow by Shao Kahn, forcefully wed by him, and as evidence seems to point out, committed suicide. Would later be cast into the Netherrealm and resurrected into Earthrealm, her will bound to Shao Kahn because of the evil taint in her soul, but would later be saved by her only daughter, Kitana.
  • Takeda - Died in his elder years of poison slipped into his tea, most likely caused by the Lin Kuei as punishment for leaving that clan. His own death did not end the rivalry between the Lin Kuei and the Shirai Ryu.
  • The Great Kung Lao - Defeated by Prince Goro of the Shokan, his soul taken from him by Shang Tsung.
  • Hanzo Hasashi (Code-name: "Scorpion") - Head was ripped off, with the spine severed from the rest of the body and still attached to the head, by the original Sub-Zero, in a mission to steal the Map of the Elements. His soul would spiral in the Netherrealm and become a specter, and he would eventually embark on an unholy mission for vengeance, for both his own death, and the death of his family and clan.
  • The entire Shirai Ryu, along with their families, including Scorpion's wife and child - Killed by Quan Chi as payment to the Lin Kuei for Sub-Zero's services.
  • Sareena - Hit with a blast from Shinnok's amulet (This happened, but it is uncertain whether or not she really did die, so I'm listing this just in case).
  • The Original Sub-Zero - Killed either during or after the Mortal Kombat Tournament by Scorpion. Sub-Zero's soul, tainted with evil, would descend to the Netherrealm, where he became a wraith, known as Noob Saibot.
  • Mileena - Killed by Princess Kitana. Would later be resurrected by either Shao Kahn, or Shinnok (possibly both), and would be consumed by hatred for Kitana, much like Scorpion had been consumed by hatred for Sub-Zero. But she will seek more than just vengeance; she will seek Kitana's very identity.
  • Kintaro - All four arms, as well as his head, ripped off by either Kung Lao or Liu Kang (may or may not be canon, given the questionability of how canon MKSM is, as well as the fact that this is one of only TWO references to Kintaro's death; the second reference is an unused bio for Motaro, which stated that Raiden vaporized Kintaro in a flash of lightning, but we don't know if that's canon, either)
  • Motaro - After having healed Kano with Shao Kahn's assistance, he imprisoned Kano, only to be slain by Sheeva.
  • Sheeva - After killing Motaro, she lets it spill that she's going to do the same to Shao Kahn. Kano offers to assist in exchange for his freedom, and she agrees. The two plan the attack, for Kano to distract Kahn while Sheeva kills him, but Kano FIGURATIVELY stabs her in the back by narcing on her, and when given the signal, Sheeva comes in, only to be LITERALLY stabbed in the back with a sword by Shao Kahn.
  • Smoke - After Kahn's invasion, Smoke is shut down, and Shao Kahn claims him as a personal trophy, as a reminder of his failed invasion, probably to one day give him momentum to try and invade Eathrealm again (Smoke's a machine now, and he did shut down, so technically, that's a "death".) Found by Noob Saibot years later, and re-activated and reprogrammed to serve Noob Saibot.
  • Cyrax - Defeated by Sub-Zero, and reprogrammed to kill Shao Kahn. Shao Kahn was defeated by the time Cyrax could even reach him, which sends him into an instructional loop, and leaves him stranded in the desert (it's possible he shut down, just like Smoke, so I'm listing this as a "death", just in case.) Found and repaired by either Sektor (who repaired him, and sent him to assassinate Sub-Zero again, but had to monitor him, too; though this part may have been retconned by either his or Jax's MKDA Konquest Mode story), or Jax & Sonya (who ended up finding him, anyway, regardless of whether or not Sektor found him in the desert first). Either way, his human soul was eventually restored by Sonya and Jax, and eventually joined the Outerworld Investigation Agency.
  • Reiko - Killed during Shinnok's war against the Elder Gods, and his soul was reborn in the Netherrealm, but returns to fight on Shinnok's side. It's quite possible he worked for Shao Kahn as a general in his armies, as is alluded to in MKD Konquest Mode.
  • Shinnok - Unconfirmed, but I'll list this just in case. Shinnok was defeated by Liu Kang (as confirmed in the info for Liu Kang's Tomb, as the four dragon symbols represented each of his MK tournament victories). His real amulet was in possession of Quan Chi, which meant he was killable.
  • Jarek - This is unconfirmed, but given the fact that Kano was mentioned as the "last survivor of the Black Dragon" in MKDA (until Kabal's death was retconned in MKD), this probably means Jarek is dead. How he died is unknown. Either he was killed by Mavado, Hsu Hao, or another member of the Red Dragon, or he died trying to push Sonya off a cliff and Sonya either side-stepped it, or tripped Jarek, causing him to pummet to his death.
  • "Shao Kahn" - Murdered by the Deadly Alliance (Quan Chi and Shang Tsung). However, unknown to them, they only killed a clone, which Shao Kahn originally created to evade death from Kitana's forces and escape.
  • Liu Kang - Fought Shang Tsung again at the Wu Shi Academy, and almost kicked his ass...had it not been for Quan Chi's interference with a skull fireball from behind. Shang Tsung snapped his neck like a twig, and took his soul. His corpse would later be re-animated by some unknown force, and his soul would later be freed upon Shang Tsung's death, and would stay in the realms of the living to release the evil hold on his corpse, as well as free his friends from Onaga's control.
  • Mavado - He thought he killed Kabal, and he sure as hell stole his hookswords, but what he didn't realize is that Kabal was saved from death by a cleric of Chaos named Havik. Kabal killed Mavado, and took his hookswords back.
  • Kano - Like Jarek and Kintaro, Kano's death is unconfirmed, but I'll list it anyway, just in case it is canon, as there's really nothing to contradict it (save for his own MKDA ending, as well as Shang Tsung and Quan Chi's MKDA endings, which, of course, did not happen, but there's really nothing to contradict Mavado's ending). It is known that Kenshi was injured by Mavado and his hookswords and was saved from death by Sub-Zero, so Mavado, thinking he killed Kenshi, got his reward; a fight with Kano. Mavado wins, and possibly kills Kano. We'll have to wait and see if this is official, if Kano survives, or if this fight does not happen.
  • Frost - Steals Sub-Zero's Dragon Medallion and freezes him, but gets consumed by her own freezing ability, as she lacks the discipline required to control the Dragon Medallion. Sub-Zero buries her in the ancient ruins once inhabited by a race of Cryomancers in Outworld.
  • Sonya, Jax, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, and Kitana - All five of them fell in battle with the Deadly Alliance. It's uncertain whether or not they actually died, and if so, they died at the hands of either the Tarkata, the resurrected army of Onaga, Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, or a combination, but I'm still listing these five at the same time, just in case, because if they did die, they died in the same place at the same time. What is certain, though, is that when Onaga returned, they were possessed by Onaga's will, and became his bodyguards. If they did die, they were resurrected first, and it would be Johnny Cage's official death. As I said earlier, his "deaths and resurrections" from MK3 and MK4 were retconned.
  • Shang Tsung and Quan Chi - After Cage, Sonya, Kitana, Kung Lao, and Jax failed to stop the Deadly Alliance, only Raiden stood between Earthrealm and total destruction. Only he was left to fight the Deadly Alliance. Needless to say, he came close, but Shang Tsung and Quan Chi used their combined sorcery to defeat Raiden. But the two would later be overcome by suspicion and lust for power, as the two sorcerers turned on each other. Quan Chi won the fight easily, but what he didn't count on was Onaga's return. He tried to stop Onaga, but then Shang Tsung, who he betrayed earlier, aided him, and to the surprise of BOTH sorcerers, Raiden came to their aid to stop Onaga, but Raiden later realized that even with their combined might, they couldn't stop Onaga, so in a last ditch effort, he began to sacrifice himself in a flash of lightning. Quan Chi and Shang Tsung were killed in the explosion, and Raiden's essence reappeared on Earthrealm...but Onaga survived, and now has Quan Chi's amulet.

  • All other deaths were either retconned, or never happened. We are still awaiting confirmation on all deaths that happened in MKD, as well as an explanation for MKSM's "deaths".
Goro is alive. Look, in the gamecube version of deception, he's a playable character! Whether it's the mk tournament or deadly alliance ending, your off by a few points. I've done stupider things, my reptile draft for example, I got the facts really messed up. So no hard feelings.

The 5 earth warriors in MKDA did die, Jade's bio confirms this.

"Kitana and her allies from Earthrealm had been slain in an epic battle against the Deadly Alliance. At the least, they had killed many Tarkata before they died."

Too bad they didn't show that in the MKD intro. Would have been awesome seeing them kill a bunch and get taken out one by one.

In Deadly Alliance's konquest there's a Kano mission against Hsu Hao where if you fail it says you should try again to get revenge for Jarek, seemingly implying Hsu Hao killed Jarek.

Sareena didn't really die. The blast destroyed her human form and her essence was banished to the 5th Plane of the Netherealm as punishment. But I suppose this could technically still be counted as a "death" though.

I wouldn't count Reiko though. His bio only says he was thought to have been killed during Shinnok's attack, but mysteriously returned.
I think it's too vague to say he definitely died or didn't.
