I've been playing it recently, and it just seems a lot more cheap than other MK games.

Do you mean computer AI wise? If so, it's exactly the same as UMK3 1.1's AI verbatim.

AI sucked in MKT for PSX just like it sucked in every other 2D MK Game. I haven't played the 3D ones against the computer enough to know if they are bad, but I assume they are.

Yah the AI is pretty anal in MKT. You gotta use cheap tactics to win...that's why I enjoy playing against other human opponents better.

Like... heres some scenarios.
1. They always walk along with me so they are in perfect position so that when I throw a projectile, they can automatical;ly counter with a jump kick.
2. So I try to run at them, and right when I get to them, they either override my attacks with a throw or a combo of their own.
3. If I try to jump in, they counter with a jump kick going straight up.
4. So I wait for them to attack. If they run, for most counter attacks, they counter by jumping over it and doing a jump kick.
Not to mention how they block and counter and special moves.
So I pretty much have to wait for them to run or walk at me, then sweep them. Then see where it goes from there.

The Game is Nearly Impossible without GameShark.
A Technique that may work for You, with Smoke:
1*When You are at The "Perfect Distance" You say:
2*Jump Backwards, and Before You Land Press LK or LP, Immediately Start Tapping Forward, Forward, Forward... (Keep doing this).
3*When The Cheap Bastard Attempts to Hit You with a Projectile Press LK, to this Point You were Tapping Forward.
4*If Timed Correctly The Sheety Foe (I.E: Jade) will Get His/Her Ass Punched.
5*Immediately, You can Continue with Spear+Uppercut or HP (Jumping Forward) + Blk.
6*Get that Distance again and Repeat Steps 2-6.

Yeah jump away and kick with any character and the CPU with throw a projectile depending on the difficulty, and their mood lol. 99% of the time they toss, but you can duck the proj, jump straight up and get a punch starter as they run in with most characters. Any character with a teleport can beat any character in the game just by jumping back kicking, and teleporting, except MK1 Kano because he never throws his projectile, but he is the easiest person to get free starter combos on as he walks in at you.
Specifically against Noob Saibot, if he gets you with a Disabler, jump back and kick and he will throw another cause a double Disabler backfire.
The game is too easy to beat to be fun, I just practice combos on P2 UMK3 and MKT, it's more fun.

the ai is always cheap, after you beat the second guy, the ai gets way too hard and it's impossible to win.

The AI in UMK3 isn't difficult at all, it's very easy to beat the game on Master Master with at least half the cast, tricky with the rest, but not impossible.

its kind of easy to defeat the game with some dudes for example with mk2 kung lao, just get a lil close to the op. and jump backwards and do the falling kick(down hk right?), that works for almost all the normal chars, (u have to do this like 2 or 3 times to hit the mk3 jax) or with the dudes that doesnt crouch really down just do the torpedo attack. (all the ninjas are easily defeated using this one. male female and cyborg ninjas)
other one is with ERMAC is just jump toward the oponent and when he/she do the straigth flyng kick
just teleport after that do the telekinetic and upercut them.(also works with smoke and scorpion just that is easier with ermac)

Yep, I've definitely noticed all the things mentioned here. The AI will position itself perfectly and everything, blah. Cheap tactics prevail, unfortunately (no fun that way). I usually try walking a couple steps in, jump at the AI with a punch (so I purposely miss) and jump back. The AI runs in, setting itself up for a combo. It works most of the time, but it gets old.

Yeah, the AI is horrible (same with UMK3). Now, I was never the best MK 3 player, but I was able to get through the game realitively easy, and had a blast doing it. But man, UMK 3 and MKT kicked my ass. It's like the AI is set-up to purposely rape your ass. Whenever I played UMK 3/MKT, it seemed more like luck than skill should I come out on top three or four battles into the game.
That's why I hope Midway's Arcade Teasures has MK 1, MK 2, and MK 3. I wouldn't mind UMK 3, as long as there's a standard version of MK 3 on the disc.

MKT's AI is at one extreme end of the spectrum, MK4's AI is at the very other end. Even on Ultimate difficulty, MK4 is nothing. Just continuous running in and doing the same combo over and over will do it, since about 90% of the time the AI will unblock during the combo. Just too damn easy.
Apparently the goal of UMK3's AI was for you to get the enemy's life below yours, and get them to lock their movement back and forth with yours, and just move that way until time ran out. HORRIBLE GAMEPLAY IDEA!! There's just no fun, excitement, nothing in just waiting over and over again few minutes at a time for that damn counter to run out.
Only way I've been able to beat it is with Sindel, by catching them in her scream, doing her pop-up combo, and tapping Forward and pressing HP to do the scream again as they get up.
