Help with running Mortal Kombat Trilogy/Older MK games on PC
In an effort to reduce the number of sticky threads in this forum, I am combining the two threads concerning operating Mortal Kombat on PC. I have extracted all the information I feel is helpful, and it will be added below.

I got a bunch of PM's and emails related to a UNIVBE problem when trying to tun the game.
here's the solution
--------------------------------
What Do I Need To Do?
--------------------------------
Rob Muller, the man responsible for the utility "UniRefresh", took the time to provide a modified UniVBE driver file that calls upon the BIOS of the video card and it may just work wonders for you and your particular hardware!
Click the link below for Modified Driver Information http://unirefresh.demonews.com/videoproblems
Click here to snag the awesome UniRefresh Utility!
http://unirefresh.demonews.com/
After grabbing the modified driver, extract the UNIVBE.DRV file from the archive into your MK Trilogy directory. Let the modified driver overwrite any previous entries.
From there, NEVER run UVCONFIG again. It'll just overwrite Rob's modified driver. You don't want that! So, after you extract Rob's modified driver, the only thing left to do is simply RUN MK Trilogy and enjoy! Rob's modified driver grabs the needed VESA information from your Video BIOS, NOT from Scitech's antiquated application, therefore, there's no longer a need to tinker with Scitech's mess!
The links seem to be down at this time, but hopefuly, they will be brought back as they worked not so long.

Go here, and download the patch that takes care of problems with errors in XP. Extract the file mktv2.sdb into the C:\Windows\AppPatch\ directory, find it, double-click the file, and it will install, creating a folder called Custom that corrects the issue, if this is the issue you're having.

It sounds to me like nobody is following instructions properly. So I'll try to make things more clearer. First off, for people having problems running MKT on XP Home or Pro, TPB hit it on the nail, only the link is dead. So here's a mirror:
mktxpfix.zip
Follow the included instructions carefully and it should work fine. It did for me. I'm not 100% sure, but it should also work for those having the same issue on 2000.
UPDATE: Okay, it doesn't work for 2000 users. It goes as far as fixing the threed.vbx error, but it still crashes. Sorry.
For those receiving a VESA error when trying to run MKT, download this patch:
mkt_patch_univbe_driver.zip
Instructions are included with this as well, but I know a lot of you don't enjoy reading lengthly instructions, so to simplify it for you, extract the included file "53.drv" to your MKT directory and rename it to "univbe.drv". I have also tested this and it worked for me.

I found it a while ago, you just extract to the file to the c:/windows/AppPatch folder and double click the file. It works better IMO and you don't have to worry about accidentailly clicking a file in the MKT folder and overwriting the patch.

I'm gonna add this:
MK / MK2 PC VBX file.
If you ever try to install PC MK games on XP, and you get an error regarding a file called "threed.vbx", download this file. It goes into the C:\Windows\System directory, and you may need to restart your PC for it to work.
Only problems with it are that MK1 is very unstable (doing the Slide among other moves will lock up the game, and it's hard to get out of it), and MK2 will not run Soundblaster (MK1 will), but Roland sound card selected will run shitty midi music and no sound fx. The game has no problems so far. Use at your own risk.

I stumbled across an application that'll fix the sound problem in MKII. It's called VDMSound. It emulates SoundBlaster/AdLib/MIDI sound in DOS better than XP/2000 does. It's an XP/2000 ONLY application and will not work on 9x. By default, XP tries to emulate DOS sound using A220 I5 D1 T3 P330. However, this obviously isn't working with MKII. So here is a solution:
1) Download and install VDMSound 2.0.4
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/vdmsound/VDMSound-2.0.4-WinNT-i386.msi?download
- Double-click on VDMSound-2.0.4-WinNT-i386.msi to install
2) Download and install VDMSound 2.0.4 "Update 2"
http://vdmsound.sourceforge.net/files/VDMSound.2.0.4.update2.zip
- Unzip directly over the VDMSound 2.0.4 files, typically residing
in C:\Program Files\VDMSound; answer "yes" when prompted to overwrite
3) Download and install LaunchPad 1.0.1
http://vdmsound.sourceforge.net/files/VDMSLaunchPad.v1.0.1.1.zip
- run uninstall.bat to uninstall any previous verions of LaunchPad
- log off or reboot, then log on again (as Administrator)
- run install.bat
Now, this will register the drivers that will emulate the sound with your system. Once done, close that window and locate your MK2 executable and right-click on it. You should see two options listed near the top called "Run with VDMS". One has a musical note icon next to it and the other one doesn't. Select the one with the icon. This will bring up a Configuration Wizard with the option of using the default configuration or a custom. Let's choose default for now. Click next. On the next screen, leave everything as is (with "Remember my settings" checked) and click Finish. This will start up MK2. By default, VDMS uses A220 I7, so make sure these are set appropriately in MK2 if it isn't already.
Viola, it should work.
I got my custom configuration to work without playing the god-awful MIDI music. However, disabling the MIDI emulation (located within the custom settings) will not do this. If disabled, your sound card will take over. So simply uncheck the Output instead. Also, once you create a configuration of any kind, it will create a shortcut in the same directory that you may edit later on by right-clicking on it and selecting Properties > Advanced. Hope this helps.

Hmmm... I downloaded the MKT patch, and for the first time I had Trilogy running fine! Then after a while I stopped getting sound in the game, and then it just stopped working. The game will load up and go through demos, but when I hit start I just get this message:
Application Error: C:\MK_Tril\MKTRILW.EXE
The instruction at 00502ea5 referenced memory at 00000012
The memory could not be read from
Click on OK to terminate the application
OK
I tried reinstalling the game and patch and resetting the machine, but I get nothing. The game was WORKING a week ago so I have no idea what's going on!

Wait, you own the MKII PC-CDROM?! I believe only about around 5 of those were ever released and only in Japan.

i should't be doing this ... what ever, you are responsable if you download i, you do know downloading is ILEGAL so not my problem:
The page is in spanish, but this link takes you right where you need to be. The game comes zipped in a .rar zip, if u can't open it just look for ''rar'' or ''.rar'' in google.
It is your problem. We don't allow Piracy or Warez on this site, and whether or not you actually do it, you are not allowed to post it here. Sincerely, SPOOn |

Try unplugging any USB controllers. My MKT won't work unless I unplug my gamepad first. If I leave it plugged in, I get no sound, and it crashes at the character select screen.
Even after installing the patch, I still need to disconnect the gamepad before I play (luckily I use a keyboard-emulating arcade stick so control isn't an issue).
